Gingerbread Houses

Last week we made simple gingerbread houses, which is a family tradition I started when our children were all very young.  We use graham crackers, because it’s easier and they still turn out cute.  I was happy this year to find most of the candy at the discount grocery store for very cheap.
The children look forward to making them every year, and the morning I announced we were going to make them, there were shouts of excitement.  And this year was the easiest year I’ve ever had making them.  With three older children to put together their own houses, all I had to do was help the two younger ones and take pictures!
I love seeing the creativity in each house.  This counts as art for the day, right?

  1. Love the idea of using graham crackers! May I ask what you used as the base…it looks like white cardboard but prettier!! 🙂

    1. Hi Angela,

The prettier ones are cardboard cake circles. They're made by Wilton, and you can usually find them at Walmart in the cake decorating section. My mother-in-law took a cake decorating class, and she gave me these. I didn't have enough of them this time, so I did cut a circular shape out of a cardboard box for one of them, and covered it in white freezer paper (and taped it to the cardboard underneath). The other one is a piece of corrugated circular white cardboard that I'm not sure where it came from, but it worked well.

In years past, before my mother-in-law gave me the cake circles, I just cut square shapes out of cardboard boxes and covered them with freezer paper. Or, you can cover it with aluminum foil, too. But, yes, the cake circles make it a lot prettier! 🙂

  2. Those are adorable! My sister is in the middle of making a great big graham cracker house and light house and is having a wonderful time too. 🙂 I love the little snowman one of your children made! 🙂
