A Mother’s Hands

This is a re-post from the archives.  This was originally posted last April (2012), but I wanted to share it again, in honor of May being the month that we celebrate mothers and all they do!

{Moments from a day in my life…}
{Helping my husband work on the lawnmower. }
{Rosemary Chicken with rosemary from my herb garden.}
{The chocolate sheet cake in the background was made by my daughter to take to a gathering.  She did a great job, and I’m so proud of her!}
Mothers have such an important job!  We love our husbands and children, cook, clean, bandage cuts and bruises, read stories, nurse babies, and many of us homeschool in addition to all that.  It is such a high calling, but sometimes it’s so easy to feel discouraged and weary.  Blessings to all the mothers who might read this!  Keep going, your family needs you! (If you’re reading this and you’re not a mother, you still have a high calling to do whatever it is He has called you to do.  May you be blessed as you do His will!)
“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might…”
~Ecclesiastes 9:10

“She…willingly works with her hands.”
~Proverbs 31:13

“Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates.”
~Proverbs 31:31

  2. Lovely, lovely, lovely! A picture is certainly worth 1000 words. I just love the many jobs of a mother. Blessings to you!

  3. I found your link through The Modest Mom link-up. I needed to be reminded of the worth of what I am doing and to not grow weary in doing good in my home. Steady plodding will get me to the end goal. I so often go through my days without enjoying all the blessing God has put around me (6 wonderful children from 10 months to 10 years, with recent news of another to come in December, and an amazing husband). I survive. Oh Lord, return to me the joy of Thy salvation! My husband and children deserve my best! Not to mention, my Lord.

    Thanks! I look forward to looking around your blog.

  4. I loved this post, Joy! A mother's hands are indeed beautiful. And what a blessing yours are to each member of your family as you use your hands to bless and minister to each of them!

  5. These are so sweet. I especially can relate to the ones braiding the girls hair. I really enjoy thta time when I'm braiding my daughter's hair. It's a time I can get them slow down, and talk to me for just a tiny second…. Then they are off running around again. Thanks for sharing.

    mamashara,
    You are so right about homemaking not being mundane. I worked outside the home for years (before having children), and I was often very bored. I've never been bored as a homemaker! 🙂

    Heather,
    Thank you!

    Anonymous,
    Happy Birthday! So thankful that the Lord might have used something here to encourage you!

    Kiera Vanella,

    Thanks!

    Karen,
    Your comment was so encouraging to me. With each of my 5 pregnancies, I have been bed-ridden for much of the time. When I'm lying in bed for months, how I long to get up and work! To be able to work with our own hands is a true blessing and privilege that we often take for granted until we are unable to do so for one reason or another.

    Mary Beth,
    Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment! I am so blessed whenever I hear from young women who also love homemaking. May you be blessed as you serve your family! 🙂

    Lisa,
    Thank you for your sweet comment!

    Jennifer,
    Thanks for encouraging me with your comment!

  9. I'm just an eighteen year old big sister to five, but I enjoy all your posts and am storing away bits of knowledge for later.

    All these pictures are so lovely they made me smile. 🙂 I really like how you did your table…especially using the jars for glasses. 😉

  10. Behind the photographs are lines of poetry – a beautiful description of how mothers look after things with their hands. I must tell my friend (who rarely visits blogs & and must borrow her son's lap-top) to pop by here.
    More than once in my mothering career I had hurt my wrists gardening or a thumb accidentally. How helpless I felt wrapped in Ace bandage with all the many jobs that awaited doing. By delegating we got by until Mama healed. I thank God for the use of my hands.
    Thank you for this touching post.
    Karen A.

  11. my goodnes…

  12. Today is my 39th birthday its 5:30 am i just finished devotions with hubby and saw him off. I woke up feeling nauseous and discouraged until i read your post. A word fitly spoken how sweet it is!! Praise the Lord for tbis bit of encouragement. Yes being a mom and homeschooling gets weary sometimes but we have a God who knows our struggles and who cares. Be blessed

  13. I love these photos (the chicken looks delish), I am new to working at home and have so far been blessed with 4 amazing years at home with my children (aged 4 and 1)…It took a while to get into it and even though I have tough days, I wouldn't change it for anything. There is nothing mundane about being a homemaker…your life is what you make it! x Shara
