Fall Garden
Our ramshackle compost bin (above), made of pallets. We just used the pallets we had available to us, and they were all different sizes, which gives the whole structure a kind of sad look. But it was free, so I guess I can’t complain.
The peppers are still going strong.
My husband is planting lettuce and spinach in the fall garden. He’s also planning to plant some radishes. Our gardening efforts have been small-scale this year, as we’ve also been sharing my parents’ huge garden. I hope to be able to plant more next year.

I liked seeing your garden, Joy, I think I will try to plant some lettuce also and see how they do. I have planted in succession before and really liked it but with the heat and drought this year it didn't work out as planned! Maybe some fall planting will do better. 🙂

Thanks, June! I know what you mean about the heat and drought. It was so hard on gardens this year. We were thinking the same thing, and hoping the fall planting will be more successful. We have actually been getting a little bit of rain the last couple of days, which we are so thankful for!

Your pallet-compost bin looks just fine 🙂 I love it that you're recycling and freecycling it! Isn't that what compost should be about, afterall? I'm glad I popped in today, it was a good reminder to get some lettuce planted. Never got spring greens in, and with the early summer and intense heat we've had here in IL, it would have been for nought, anyway. Hopefully the Lord will bless some fall lettuce, I could sure use it! Enjoy yours with your sweet family!

Thanks, Lori. Yes, you're so right…it doesn't really matter what the compost bin looks like, as long as it's doing the job! We had the same intense heat and early summer here. We're so thankful that it has cooled off a bit the last few days, and that we actually got some rain.

Oh Joy how wonderful to see that your garden is flourishing!
We have been trying and trying to start our gardens.
3 times this year!
Then when it finally starts sprouting and I cheer and are super happy… the mice and bunnies eat it all up after it is nice and tall.
We tried blood meal, traps, etc… almost picked up 2 cats to help solve the problem but I am sorry to say that I am not a cat person.
How do you do it with your garden!
I did discover one remedy though!
I collected empty coffee containers and so I cut the bottoms out and put them up side down over my newly sprouting bulbs and seeds.
So it looks kinda hideous ;D but they get the chance to grow…
For now I just gave up on watering the others… (you can have only so many cans!) And I hope to have a nicer flourishing garden next year.
We have major ideas to deal with the rodents!
In the mean time I will just have to enjoy your garden!

Sandy, that's terrible that the mice and bunnies are eating your garden! We have big dogs here that run free (not ours, they belong to neighbors), and I wonder if that keeps the bunnies away. Although we have also had trouble with dogs running through the gardens, and they are in raised beds! That's the only thing I can think of, is there must be some predators here that keep those little creatures out of the yard.

Hey at least you are able to have a compost area! 🙂 We used hay bales for ours. 🙂 And I think that we might need a few more bales actually. I am working on a fall garden! I just weeded two of our beds out and laid newspaper down then some organic soil was able to transplant 18 tomatoe plants into a bed that gets more sun and plant a bunch of herbs. Tomorrow I'm planning on getting one of our beds filled with spinach, swiss chard, kale, collard greens, turnip greens and some lettuce I'm trying to plant as much as I can for fall as we should be welcoming Lord willing a new blessing end of Nov. :o) I haven't grown a fall garden so this should be fun! I just also read that for our area I could do another planting of cucumbers so I might sneak a few seeds in the ground as well. :o)
Wow, it sounds like you have a lot of plans for your garden! It sounds wonderful! I'm feeling inspired to add a bit more to ours. 🙂
