Farm Fresh Southern Cooking Review

I must admit that I love cookbooks.  I have a small collection that I glean ideas and inspiration from on a regular basis.  This cookbook, Farm Fresh Southern Cooking: Straight from the Garden to Your Dinner Table, is a delight to look at.  With beautiful photos of fruit, vegetables, gardens, and completed recipes, it is definitely an inspiration.
Intermingled with the recipes are pages devoted to various farms, orchards, farmers’ markets, bee keepers, and other small farming ventures.  With a focus on eating local and in-season, there are also plenty of ideas for creatively using up your own garden produce.
Some of the recipes include ingredients we don’t usually have on hand (or don’t use in our cooking), but I think it would be simple to make substitutions (something I do on a regular basis anyway!).  I have already marked several recipes I want to try from this book, such as the Confetti Chicken Salad, Revival Strawberry Bread, and the Hot Cheddar Cornbread.
From the book description:
“Is there anything better than a kitchen countertop spread with the spoils of a Saturday morning at the farmers’ market? Every trip yields some new assortment of old favorites and newfound treasures. One week, you’re tempted by the sun-warmed heirloom tomatoes and the Mason jars brimming with orange blossom honey. Another week, it’s the slabs of milky Havarti cheese and the Red Haven peaches heavy with juice, enticing you to spend just a little more than you planned. Kentucky pole beans, silky ears of sweet corn, and sacks of stone-ground buckwheat flour may find their way into your basket on another visit.
Whether you shop with a list or purely on impulse, you’ll always find the truest taste of home at the local farms, roadside stands, and produce markets in your community. These are the places that offer up the native flavors of the South and all its seasons. They are your portal to the fields, the waters, and the vines where your food is cultivated. Get to know the origins of what you eat and the people who produce it. Tammy Algood’s Farm Fresh Southern Cooking celebrates this experience with delicious recipes that will enhance the natural flavors of your latest market haul and stories of the South’s most dedicated growers and culinary producers.”

Overall, I think this is a wonderful cookbook, and I’m so thankful to have it on my shelf.

  2. Heather,
I agree with you, it's a great idea to have regional cookbooks. This one is geared toward the south, but a lot of the ingredients would also work well for other regions. "Simply in Season" is another cookbook I have that I really like. 🙂

    Collette,
I really like this one! I love the photos…there isn't a photo to accompany every recipe, but the ones included are really lovely.

  3. Looks like a great cookbook! I love the type that includes stories, facts and other inspiration…makes it fun to browse for recipes 🙂 Seasonal and local is where my cooking is at, these days – I think I will have to check this one out!
