How to Be a Better Homemaker

I’ve been a homemaker for over twenty years now, but I’m still always learning new things. There’s always something I could be doing better!

Here are some of the best tips for how to be a better homemaker that I’ve compiled through the years.

With these simple ideas, you’ll be on your way to homemaking success in no time!

Renew Your Vision

As I’ve mentioned before, having an inspiring and motivating vision is so important for homemakers.

Without this important key, we can get overwhelmed and lost in the midst of necessary but more mundane homemaking tasks.

Washing dishes, cleaning toilets, and struggling to stay on top of the laundry pile day after day can cause even the most dedicated homemaker to lose her joy.

The solution to this? A vision of the bigger picture. In other words, you need an exciting vision of the power of home.

You need to know your “why.” Why are you doing this in the first place? Why do little homemaking tasks matter?

For more on this, read about Why Homemaking Matters here.

So what really matters? Well, housework, among other things. It is not the only thing that matters, but it does matter. It matters that people have somewhere to come home to and that there be beds and meals and space and order available there.

Whether we do a lot of housework or a little of it, whether we keep house only for ourselves or for other people as well, housework forms part of the basic patterning of our lives, a pattern that we might identify as a kind of ‘litany of everyday life.’  —Margaret Kim Peterson

Refresh Your Routines

When life isn’t running smoothly and things at home are feeling overwhelming or disorganized, it helps to refresh your homemaking routines.

Are you spending enough time each day on homemaking? I’ve found that I feel the most discouraged when I’ve let the house go and the clutter is piling up.

Sometimes this is because of illness or just too much busyness.

Recently I realized that I had let other “good” activities crowd out my home tending tasks. I was just doing the bare minimum rather than giving my home the attention it truly needs.

I like to reevaluate my homemaking schedule and daily routines seasonally, at least.

If you’re feeling like your home is getting out of control, try this.

Take a look at your daily schedule and routines, and see if you need to devote more time to home maintenance and upkeep.

It takes quite a bit of time to manage a home and keep things running smoothly, so be sure to allot enough time in your schedule to do it well.

Create a Plan

There’s a well-known quote that says, “failing to plan is planning to fail.” And in many cases, this is true, especially when it comes to homemaking.

Two of the areas that seem to require advance planning are cleaning and meals.

I’ve found that whenever I’m not planning regular cleaning times (when I let the cleaning routine go), our house gets out of control more easily.

And everyone knows that feeling of dread when it’s five o’clock and there’s nothing planned for the evening meal!

In order to keep things running smoothly, it helps so much to have a cleaning schedule and a meal plan in place.

Making a meal plan can be as simple as just jotting down some of your family’s favorite meals and then writing the ingredients down on your weekly shopping list.

Sometimes I just quickly plan some simple meals (like roast, roast chicken, or quiche), and write them down in my planner (this is the planner I’ve been using for the past few years).

Take the Day Off

As counterintuitive as it may seem, sometimes what you need is a day off! Every homemaker needs a break now and then!

Homemaking is hard work. Especially when you’re juggling work and managing a home at the same time. As a work-at-home mom, I know the struggle well.

We can give and give and give of ourselves, but what happens when we run out of steam? What happens to our home and relationships when we crash?

If we’re not careful, and we don’t make taking care of ourselves a priority, we can crash and burn, and then no one benefits.

First, be sure to put these things on your daily schedule:

  • Time for adequate rest
  • Daily time for soul care (reading the Bible and other encouraging books, prayer, and meditation)
  • Exercise time
  • Time to nurture relationships (date night with spouse, one-on-one time with kids, time with friends)

And then, every once in awhile (or more regularly!), be sure to take a day off to nourish your own heart and soul.

When you start getting that feeling like things are spiraling out of control, or you’re feeling overwhelmed and discouraged, sometimes it helps to get away for awhile.

If you can’t get away for the day or evening, try just cancelling any “extras” on your schedule and turning in early with a good book (taking a long relaxing bath helps, too!).

Then you can return to your homemaking tasks with a refreshed mind and renewed energy!
