Instant Pot Black Beans have been a staple on our menu lately. This frugal meal idea is easy to make and faster in the pressure cooker!
As we were working to cut our grocery budget in half recently, I realized beans would need to be part of our diet on a regular basis.
Beans are not my favorite food, but we had a lot of them available in our food storage. We had previously purchased a 25 pound bag of black beans, and since they were available it felt like free food.
So I set out to find ways to make them more palatable.
This recipe has become one of our favorite ways to eat dried beans. My kids even look forward to eating this!

When using an Instant Pot for dried beans, you don’t even have to soak them! However, I still usually soak mine just to make them a bit more digestible.

This recipe is larger in size since we have a larger family. I have this larger sized Instant Pot. If you don’t need as many servings, feel free to halve the ingredients.
Ingredients:
- 2 pounds (about 5-5 1/2 cups ) dried black beans, soaked
- 10 cups water
- 4 Tb olive oil
- 4 tsp. salt
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 medium onion, chopped (optional)
- 1 Tb cumin
- 2 bay leaves
Instructions:
- Sort beans and rinse well. Soak beans in water overnight.
- Combine ingredients in the Instant Pot and stir.
- Cover with lid and turn into locked position. Set the vent to sealing.
- Manually set to cook for 6 minutes for previously soaked beans.
- After timer goes off, let pressure release naturally for 30 minutes and then do a quick release before removing the lid.
- Serve over rice. We like to add salt and pepper, garlic salt, and hot sauce to taste (we add seasonings to individual bowls after serving).
Notes: If you didn’t soak your beans, I would try 20-25 minutes for the cooking time. I haven’t tested this since I prefer to soak mine overnight before cooking.
