Farmhouse Style Master Bedroom Updates
Thanks to a recent birthday and generous family members, I was able to make some farmhouse master bedroom updates this month!
It seems like we often save the master bedroom for last when it comes to decorating. The other rooms of the house are more visible to guests, so I guess that’s why we do it. But really, shouldn’t we make the bedroom more of a priority?
I tend to spend a lot of time in my bedroom since it’s the only space I can pretty much call my own in the whole house (my husband is fine with that since he has a home office all to himself!). 🙂
I also enjoy creating a special place just for us as a married couple.
For reference, here’s what our master bedroom used to look like. And then it looked like this.
My husband bought our bed before we got married, and gave it to me as a wedding gift. It was made by a local craftsman, and it’s kind of a family heirloom at this point. I have, however, considered painting it white. Is that crazy?!
I never was crazy about the stenciled painting on the headboard part, and it does tend to make our small bedroom look a bit smaller due to all the darker wood. I wish I could get a full picture of it, but I don’t have a wide-angle lens for my camera.
So, what do you think? Should I try painting it?
Master Bedroom Updates
The recent updates came in the form of new bedding and a new sign for over our bed.
I have been looking for a white quilt for so long, and I finally found just the one I wanted—the Pottery Barn Pick-Stitch Quilt—and it was on sale!
I replaced our previous duvet and pillow covers with this adorable checked set from Ikea. I’ve always loved checks, and I really like that these are neutral.
We’re still using these lamps I found years ago at the dollar store. And I’ve been displaying this old-fashioned photo of my husband and I as newlyweds for many years. It’s one of my favorite pictures of us!
Our matching nightstands were purchased very inexpensively from one of my husband’s coworkers about 15 years ago. I’m also wondering how hard they would be to paint!
This knit pillow with wooden buttons came from Zulily.
Our bed is tall, so I had to find a special bed skirt with a longer drop than the usual ones. I found it a couple of years ago at Wayfair. I love the look of a bed without a bed skirt, but our bed shows the box spring without it, so it’s kinda necessary. 😉

We’re loving the fresh, new look of our master bedroom, but of course I still have plans for more updates!

I’m very late to the party but I love your bedroom. We’re going to making some updates in about a month and I would love to recreate. Is her buffalo check bedding a gray or more or a beige? Also what color are your walls painted?

Yes I would paint the bed white, I love rustic wood painted white. I agree about the stenciling. I am in love with your checks! You had me searching Ikea for a gray one, and they do have one 🙂 I love your room, very serene. I just need to work on the clutter, it seems to always be our room that stuff to get rid of gets put, it drives me crazy. I agree making the bed makes a world of difference on how a room feels. I spend a lot of time in my room also but that means so does everyone elae, to hang out with Mom . Some day I won’t have any visitors in here and I will miss it, I am sure.
Maybe one of these days I’ll get around to painting it. We’re really slow to get projects done around here! 🙂 I try really hard to keep my room clean and clutter-free, but it’s a huge challenge. Especially, like you said, since everyone wants to gather there! Our basement (where our school room is) got water in it, and we had to tear out the carpet, so I’ve been doing school with my youngest in our bedroom. So, at the moment, it’s not very serene-looking! 🙂
We do allot of school in our room with our youngest also. I am bad about saying ” Go get these books and meet me in my room”. So, totally my fault with that. We are slow with projects also, time or money is always the problem if we have time we don’t have the money, but if work is busy so we have money there isn’t time.
I can totally relate! 🙂

WHat a fun and inviting retreat you have created for you and your husband. Very sweet. A white headboard would be wonderful, BUT there’s no turning back when you do it, so that would be a step I wouldn’t be sure of either. 🙂

I really like your master bedroom. Your dollar store lamps are absolutely adorable! Mine is so bland and boring, though we have done a few things with it in the last few years. One of my favorites is the electric fireplace that we bought with Christmas money two Christmases ago. It’s so lovely and helps get our bedroom warmer for those special moments. My other favorite thing is re-painting very old night tables to be white. I like painting furniture. I encourage you to go for it especially with the night tables.

If you put a fitted sheet over the box springs it covers it neatly and eliminates the use of a bed skirt. Blessings,
Thanks for the tip, Renee! Another good thing about my bed skirt is that it’s currently hiding some items I store under there (small house = very little storage), so I guess I’ll keep it for now. 🙂
