Peppermint Hot Cocoa Gift Jars

During the winter months, my kids love hot cocoa. It also makes a great gift idea. Make these peppermint hot cocoa gift jars the next time you need a handmade Christmas gift!

This peppermint hot cocoa is such an easy and simple gift in a jar idea!

I love making handmade Christmas gifts, and this one couldn’t be easier. While we often make our own homemade hot chocolate mix, I decided to take the easy route for this gift and use a mix from the grocery store.

And I don’t know what it is about mason jars, but wouldn’t you agree that they make everything just a little bit cuter?!

I love this type of gift because, in addition to being super cute and easy to make, it’s also one of those gifts that won’t add clutter. The recipient can simply use up the hot cocoa mix and then repurpose the cute jar for something else. Love that!

This is another simple idea that your kids can help with. My kids were very interested in helping me make the peppermint hot cocoa gift jars (mostly because they were hoping they could eat the leftover marshmallows and peppermint!).

My boys especially enjoyed crushing the peppermint with a rolling pin. 🙂

I have a very large stash of Mason jars (thanks to collecting them from thrift stores and garage sales for years, and inheriting some from my mom), and we use them for everything from food storage to drinking glasses. But for this project I used these, because they had a unique shape (and I found them on sale).

Peppermint Hot Cocoa Gift Jars

Here’s how we made these gift jars. It’s so easy!

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. Fill the jars 2/3 full with the hot cocoa mix.
  2. Add a layer of mini marshmallows.
  3. Crush the candy canes (add candy canes to a small freezer bag, seal the bag, and then pound the bag with a rolling pin). Be careful not to crush the candy canes so much that they turn into a powder. You just want chunks of peppermint in the top of the jar.
  4. Add the peppermint chunks to the top of the jar and screw on the lid.
  5. Download the printable tags here.
  6. Cut out the tag, punch a hole in the top, and then be sure to add the directions for making the hot cocoa on the back of the tag. I just added the directions found on the back of the hot cocoa container.
  7. Tie the tag around the neck of the jar using the baker’s twine.

  1. Help!
My mother surprised me by cross stitching tops for mason jars!
She sent the Mason jars home with my husband. I did not look, my understanding was they were really small Mason jars so I planned on filling them with red and green M&Ms.
Now my dilemma, none of the jars are the same size!
Some are huge, some have handles, some do not and there is the lone little jar size I thought I was getting.
What do I do with so many different sizes?
Also, I can neither see or print the directions.
    Helo!
