215 oz.cans pinto, kidney, or chili beansdrained and rinsed
Instructions
In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, brown the beef, onion, and garlic together over medium heat for about 10 minutes. Cook and stir until beef is brown. Drain.
Add the rest of the ingredients except for the beans. Stir all together and bring to a low boil, then reduce heat and cover. Simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
Add the beans, stirring to combine with the rest of the ingredients. Bring to a boil, and then reduce heat. Simmer uncovered for another 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally until chili has thickened.
Notes
If meat is unavailable, you can leave it out and just add some extra beans or cheese for protein and flavor.If your family isn’t a big fan of garlic or cumin, leave those ingredients out and just use onions and chili powder.Feel free to try different beans such as pinto, kidney or ready-to-use chili beans (or experiment with a combination of those beans).Try serving homemade chili with hot cornbread or garlic toast for a special addition to your meal.Sour cream, grated cheese, and diced onions are all great options for chili toppings.
