October Days

Oh, the lovely, crisp, colorful days of October!  Days filled with pumpkins and leaves, running through the yard with Snoopy (the dog who adopted us this summer), baking in the kitchen, and the smell of wood smoke from our neighbors’ chimneys.
Last week we went to my parents’ house and made a trip out to their garden, to the little pumpkin patch they had planted just because I asked them to (thanks, Mom and Dad!).  The children loved helping to harvest them all before the first frost.  We came home with a huge pile of pie pumpkins, a few larger ones, and also some squash.  I love the color orange in October.  Any other time of the year it isn’t my favorite, but in October it suddenly becomes a favorite color.  🙂  We made pumpkin butter with a few of the pumpkins, and roasted the seeds for snacks.
These cookies were completely child-made, and they were so delicious.  I enjoy watching them being creative together, even though it makes a tremendous mess!  This time our two-year-old guy ended up eating half a bottle of sprinkles…when I walked up to him, he held the bottle up to me and said, “Here, Mommy, want some?”  It was so adorable that I just held my open palm out and let him sprinkle them in my hand…it was one of those moments where I just wanted to join in with their childish joys and be part of it all.
“‘Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them, for of such is the kingdom of God.  Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.’  And He took them up in His arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed them.”

  2. Looks like you are enjoying a lovely autumn!! It has been so cloudy and rainy here this past month… 🙁 I love orange in October too, otherwise, like you it is not my favourite colour. 🙂 I was just reminded we have two more pumplins out in the garden that should be brought in.

I love the eating the jar of sprinkles, isn't it so easy to start scolding first, but good for you in enjoying the moment with your little boy. Great reminder for me. 🙂

P.S we had a baby boy last Thursday. 🙂

I just got so warm and cosy because of the sphere of your pictures and your lines. Wow amazing. I will come back often here; to read more about all christianity; I am fairly new to faith but on my way.

  5. What lovely pictures! I have been doing a lot with butternut squash the last month. I love the fall–I am just waiting for it to finally cool down here–been rather warm lately!

  6. Oh, I forgot to mention that I used Rapadura in place of the brown sugar in the pumpkin butter recipe…it worked great…just in case anyone else has that on hand. 🙂

  8. I loved this post, Joy! It looks like you all have been enjoying this beautiful season of fall. And what a fun outing for your family. The dog that 'adopted' your family is so cute! Ezra sure seems to like him. 🙂

The cookies your children made turned out very nice, and what a blessing to be able to enjoy all of that squash and pumpkin. Hope you all continue to have a wonderful fall!

  9. October is my favorite month! I never use orange in my decorating except pumpkins! I love them and the way they are instantly autumn decor! And they taste so good!

    Blessings, Joy!
