I had so much fun sewing for my oldest son the past few weeks!
He doesn’t really even notice what clothing he wears most of the time, but I just wanted to make him some things to show him how much I love him. He was very appreciative of them!
First, I made this adorable apron, which is suitable for either a boy or a girl, depending on the fabric you use:

I used the Free Montessori Child’s Apron Pattern by Sew Liberated.
The great thing about this pattern (in addition to the fact that it’s free!) is that children can put this on all by themselves!
It’s designed with a 3-6-year-old child in mind.
But I simply lengthened it slightly and widened the top part (just backing it away from the fold a bit) to make it fit my 8-year-old. It fit him just great!
Here he was helping me make his birthday cake:

This photo shows the waist strap, which comes around the back and attaches to the front with a piece of Velcro.
The neck strap has elastic in it, so the child can simply slip it on over their head.
There are no ties, so they can put this apron on completely independently!
It’s a very ingenious design, and very easy to sew. I highly recommend it.

Next, I made these pajama shorts.
They look huge in this picture, and they did turn out a little big for my very thin 8-year-old.
But the elastic fits the waist, so they won’t fall off. 🙂
I didn’t have a pattern for these, I just cut around a pair of shorts he already had, and added a seam allowance. This was super easy!

And finally, I made this train pillowcase. It was just cute and simple to make.

Here is a great Free Pattern for Simple Pillowcases, from Candle on the Hill.
Here are a few pictures of the birthday cake:

I thought it turned out so cute, and all the children loved helping to decorate it (and experience candy-and-food-coloring overload!).
We had a fun birthday party at home with family. The older girls planned a treasure hunt with his biggest present hidden where the last clue led him (in his closet).
It was so fun to watch him run to find each new clue, and there was great excitement when he finally reached the last one!
How can my little boy be 8 already?!

Do you like sewing for boys? If so, what types of things do you make?

Ohh I love your ideas. Especially the apron which I will be making tonight. I was looking for a boys apron pattern . And yes kids boy or girl 1-100 love jammi shorts. . Thank you for the ideas. My idea for u is bean bag frogs! I’m telling ya’ , I have several grands. and they love them. If you make it with stuffing and beans they can cuddle them , they can pose them, they can play toss back. They are fun. My 5yr. Grandson just asked for one last week. One of the fabrics he chose for said frog is beautiful little primary colored airplanes all over white background. That’s going to be one busy looking frog.
Thank you, Tam! My boys loved that apron so much. And thank you for the bean bag frog idea–that sounds so adorable!
