Even though we’ve been “doing school,” we’ve been taking it easy. The older girls do their school books in the morning, and have all afternoon free. I have been giving Ian reading lessons in the morning and then he does a page or two in his workbook.
We’ve been enjoying all the nature study opportunities that come up. There have been many frogs, toads, slugs, bugs, and birds to watch and find out more about. We also have an ant farm that we’re observing inside. The fields around our house are full of wild flowers since there are no horses out there this year.
Elyse read a biography of John Bunyan that she found on our bookshelves, and David is reading The Pilgrim’s Progress aloud after supper. I like for him to read it because he makes it easy to understand. I think the fact that Elyse had already read about John Bunyan made Pilgrim’s Progress more interesting to her. During the afternoons I’ve been reading a book from the 1800’s called A Boy on a Farm which all the children like because it has beautiful illustrations.
We found a complete World Book Encyclopedia set for $5.00 at a flea market. And it’s in excellent condition! We were so amazed that all of the books were there, including the atlas, dictionary and a year book. Many afternoons the girls have enjoyed looking up something in the books. The two little ones like to look at the pictures.
We all enjoy the natural opportunities for learning that come along every day. Especially when it’s something we can do outside, since the weather is so nice!
