- Wash and style as usual. I blot it dry with a lint-free towel, or you can use an old t-shirt. Then I add gel and scrunch to get the curls to form their usual curl pattern.
- Wait until it dries naturally.
- I divide my hair into two parts, as if I was going to make two pigtails. I bring each half forward and let them rest on my shoulders.
- I cut each curl section individually. Surprisingly, this doesn’t take long.
- Then I might add a few layers to the sides.
- Check the hair to make sure it’s even (as even as it can be when you’re dealing with curls!). I find I often need to even up a few sections here and there and cut any stray hairs I might have missed.

No salon use here. Took me years to be brave enough to cut my own. But I decided it was long enough I could afford to mess it up. I have straight straight hair. But I'm too cheap to pay. And too scared. They never did what I wanted when I did pay for it.

Your hair always looks great! I know what you mean about them not doing what you want, too. It doesn't seem worth it for the price and hassle of going somewhere. 🙂

I cut my whole family's hair.

Great! It saves lots of money!

I have never cut my hair or my children's because we all have straight, and fine hair which shows every little snip, and a mistake would be very obvious! If I had wavy or curly hair I definitely would. It would save so much money!

I don't blame you, Sara! It is a lot harder to get it just right when you're dealing with straight hair. I do have two children with straight hair (my oldest daughter and my oldest son), and so far it turns out just fine, but there are a lot of variables (my oldest daughter likes her hair long, so I just trim it and also add layers). But I definitely wouldn't do my own if it was straight! 🙂
