Felt Valentine Holders (Easy DIY Project)

Felt Valentine Holders are quick to make with some basic sewing skills! These DIY felt Valentine pouch holders tie to the back of a chair and can be filled with Valentine’s cards, candy, or other treats.

All you need for these felt Valentine chair pockets is felt, ribbon, and a sewing machine.

(Technically you could sew these by hand, but they’re so much faster with a sewing machine.)

I made seven of these Valentine’s card holders (one for each member of my family). This is one of those crafts that I decided to do on a whim, and it actually turned out successfully!

It was one of those projects that I didn’t even plan very carefully, and I had decided I just didn’t have time for it.  But then I found myself doing it anyway, late one evening before bed.  And now I’m so glad I made the time.

I was amazed at the wonderful response these Valentine chair pockets received from my family.

When my children saw these hanging from their chairs the morning after I made them, they actually hugged me and kissed me and thanked me profusely for making them.
What followed was a feverish card-making session with Bibles opened to find verses on love (and I didn’t even suggest this!), paper cutting, and brothers and sisters encouraging and edifying each other through words and art.  So very beautiful and precious!
I love that they tie to the back of a chair, which eliminates clutter in our small house.
These Valentine card holders are so easy to make!  This post inspired the making of these, although I did mine a bit differently.

DIY Felt Valentine Holders

Here is what you need to make these easy Valentine card holders:
  • 8″ or 9″x 12″ craft felt sheets (like these) in whatever color you would like to use.  I used a bright pink for the girls and red for the boys.  You’ll need two sheets for each holder.
  • Ribbon (it takes quite a bit if you’re making as many as I did (7) !
  • Sewing machine and thread, or you can use embroidery floss or twine if you’d like to use the blanket stitch to bind the edges.  This takes longer, so I used my sewing machine for all but one.
  • Scissors
  • Lace, buttons, or other embellishments
1. To begin, cut off a 2-2 1/2 inch strip from one of the sheets of felt.  I didn’t measure this, I just decided how much I wanted the flap to overlap, and then I cut from there.
2. Sew two pieces of ribbon to the back of the longer piece of felt (this will be the back of your holder).  I don’t have specific measurements for the ribbon, but this should be easy to determine.
I just tried it out on my chairs and decided how long I wanted them. Then I cut them all the same length.

I used a straight stitch on my machine and sewed backward and forward several times to tack them in place.

Lay the two pieces of felt one on top of the other, with edges matching.  The piece you trimmed will be shorter than the other.
Next, I cut out letters freehand from some extra felt, and sewed them on the front flap with each child’s name.
I first tried using fabric glue to secure the letters, but they didn’t stick well enough, so I ended up sewing them on.

For embellishment, I added some lace to the girls’, and sewed buttons on the boys’.

I didn’t have time to add names to my husband’s and mine, so they ended up plain (and we didn’t mind).

Tie To Back of Chairs

After you finish making them, simply tie them to the back of your dining room chairs (or wherever else you’d like to tie them).

Felt Valentine Holders

These have been so much fun. So much love and creativity has been shared because of these!

I have a pile of lovely cards my children made for me as well.  My oldest daughter said “Let’s make the most for Mommy, because she deserves it.”  So sweet!

Edited in February 2020 to add: This is our 7th year to use these, and they’re still going strong!
And speaking of making cards for each other, did you know you can turn a heart into an envelope? These are so fun to make, and so simple.  We’ve made so many of them!

How to Make Heart Envelopes:

1.  Cut out a heart shape out of construction paper
2.  Turn it upside down.
3.  Fold the two sides in.
4.  Fold up the bottom.
5.  Fold the top over.
6.  Attach a sticker to hold it closed!

  2. Joy, these are so adorable!! I had so many wonderful plans for this week, but then we all got hit with the flu. 🙁 I will definitely file this away for next year though! Thank you for sharing!

    1. Thank you Angela! Oh, I feel for you with getting the flu…we got it the week of Christmas, and it prevented a lot of fun things I had planned, too. I hope you're feeling better!

    1. I've always wanted a bench! 🙂 You could still use this idea and tie the bags to something else. Or, make a different kind of handle, and hang it on hooks or something maybe. Thanks so much for your comment, Cheryl!
