Learn how to make snow ice cream this winter during snow days! This is such a simple, fun winter treat to make!
A Winter Family Tradition
I remember as a kid being so excited when it would snow. I loved playing in the snow, but most of all I loved getting to make homemade snow ice cream!
My brother and I would go out and look for the freshest snow we could find. We would scoop it up into a big bowl, and excitedly bring it into the kitchen to my mom.
Then we would all enjoy making snow ice cream together.
I remember it seemed like the best ice cream we had ever tasted. And it made such a deep impression on my mind.
It became one of those favorite childhood memories that I loved returning to whenever winter arrived.
Imagine how excited I was when I found that my husband’s family had the same tradition!
My husband and I loved passing on the snow ice cream tradition to our kids.
Now, every year when it snows, one of the kids takes a big bowl outside and looks for the freshest snow.
And then we have the fun of making snow ice cream together. So much fun.

One of the best things about snow ice cream (besides how delicious it it) is how incredibly easy it is to make!
And, I love that this is something kids can help with. I always let my kids gather the snow, since that’s what my mom always did, and it makes such fun memories.
This is safe as long as they’re old enough to only get clean snow! Younger kids will need your help and guidance here.
So first, we get out a big stainless steel bowl (you can use any bowl—we use one like this) and a large spoon. Then we fill the bowl with some fresh, clean snow.
Once you have your snow, bring it inside and gather up the rest of your ingredients.
Ingredients for Snow Ice Cream
The other ingredients for this recipe are really simple. You probably already have them in your home.
Here’s what you need:
- About 4 quarts (or 16 cups) of fresh, clean snow (this large 5 qt bowl works well)
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
This is our traditional family recipe, that both my husband’s family and my family used.
Easy Snow Ice Cream Recipe
Keep in mind that making snow ice cream is mostly about making fun memories together. It won’t turn out as smooth and creamy as regular homemade ice cream.
But kids just love the process of gathering the snow, bringing it in, and mixing up the ingredients!
And, it really is delicious!
Here’s how to make it:
- Gather a big bowl full of clean, fresh snow (about 4 quarts).
- In a medium bowl, mix together the milk, sugar, and vanilla. Stir well, until the sugar dissolves.
- Pour milk and sugar mixture over the bowl of snow, and stir.
Notes: You may need to adjust the amount of milk depending on the consistency of the snow. Some members of my family like to add extras like cocoa powder, chocolate syrup, or sprinkles to this recipe. I prefer plain old vanilla! 🙂

Being Southern, I have made snow cream all my life. Same ingredients but never knew there was a “recipe.”
We never used to use a recipe either, until my kids got older and we wanted more precise measurements to make it!
I really need to try this sometime. I never made it growing up, but I’ve been curious, and I know my nieces and nephew would LOVE it Now it just needs to snow. haha

I’m sure they would love it!
