Trim Healthy Mama Update {5 Pounds Gone!}

Okay, I know 5 pounds isn’t much, but I’m really excited about it!  It’s a beginning.

Getting Started with Trim Healthy Mama

When I first wrote my review of Trim Healthy Mama back in December (7 months ago!), I had every intention of jumping right in and changing over to the plan.  But then life happened.  We got the flu, then strep, then my husband had a crisis with a kidney stone.  It was just one thing after another.
But three weeks ago I decided I was ready to fully embrace this way of eating, and I just went for it. Sometimes my perfectionism gets in the way of just doing things, and I didn’t want to let that happen here. So I just picked a few recipes to start with and made up my mind that I was going to do this!
We’ve been using alternative sweeteners (such as stevia and xylitol) for years, but it was hard for me to let go of the honey and maple syrup.  And the raw milk.  But now I don’t even miss those things.  And my children still drink the raw milk and eat the honey and maple syrup and the sprouted whole grain bread (and I can still have yogurt or kefir).
(Sweeteners I use now:  Xylitol, Zsweet–I rarely use this, my husband just found it at the discount grocery store for a dollar–and NuStevia)

The Changing Mom-Body

When I got married, I weighed around 98 pounds and wore a size 0-4.  After giving birth to a couple of children, I was a size 6-8.
But after giving birth to my fifth, I figured I was carrying around about 25 extra pounds (all while eating soaked whole grains, raw dairy products, and all the other farm-fresh “nourishing” foods we could find). Since I’m short, it doesn’t take much extra weight to make me feel a little bit roly-poly.  🙂  And I’m not really focusing on how much weight is lost, but how my clothes fit.
For the past 3 weeks, I’ve been working on my core and trying to heal my diastasis recti (an abdominal separation I acquired during pregnancy).  I have high hopes for regaining strength and tone in my waistline area–but I’m not there yet!

What I’ve Been Eating

For breakfast I eat three eggs fried in butter or coconut oil.  Or I can have a muffin made with coconut or almond flour and more coconut oil.  Or oatmeal with cream, cinnamon, vanilla, stevia, and maybe a handful of frozen blueberries.  It’s all delicious and filling.
I’ve been enjoying this super simple lunch.  It’s the Mexican Cottage Cheese Salad.  It’s easy to put together, I like the taste of it, and I’m not hungry after eating it.
Or I’ll eat a huge salad with grilled chicken breast, lettuce from the garden, tomatoes (also from the garden), and cucumbers.  I’m never hungry after that, and my husband (who is doing this with me!) says it’s the best salad he’s ever eaten.
Dinner can be a meatloaf with steamed vegetables and salad (and chocolate or other dessert afterward!) or a delicious quiche (we have an abundance of eggs right now!), or another satisfying and filling dish.

I Love This Drink!

And my drink of choice lately has been this apple cider vinegar/ginger “Good Girl Moonshine” mixture.  It doesn’t sound at all good, but I love it!
You just fill a quart jar with water and ice cubes, add 1-2 Tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon of ground ginger, and a few shakes of stevia.  If you don’t like stevia, you can also make this with any kind of sweetener, including honey.  But for weight loss purposes, something that doesn’t raise your insulin would be better.
The amazing thing about the Trim Healthy Mama way of eating is that it doesn’t feel like a diet. At least that’s how most of us feel.  You can have dessert, chocolate, muffins, and delicious hearty dishes, and you can still lose weight!  It may not be for everyone, but I’m very happy to have found a way of eating that has the potential to help me lose a bit of weight while also helping control my blood sugar issues. For me, it’s a lifestyle change.

P.S.  The skirt in the photo above is a Downeast skirt from Zulily, and the shoes are also from Zulily.  It’s become my favorite place to shop for clothing.

    1. It is so good, isn't it! I don't know for sure about the vinegar. I use Bragg's, which has the "mother" in it, but I don't know if it makes any difference or not.

  1. 5 pounds! Good for you! I've heard so much about this book but have not read it yet. I'm going to have to get a copy and find out for myself what everyone is talking about. Thank you for sharing your testimony and tips.
    oh, and love the skirt!

  2. Way to go, Joy!! It is always encouraging when the scale is heading down and the clothes are fitting better. 🙂 I've been on the Trim Healthy Mama eating plan for about a month and have seen positive results as well. I'm not always perfect in my eating but I think I've made pretty good progress. A friend asked me to run a 5k with her in October so now I'm currently training for that. I would have never thought at 35 that I would be running at all, lol.

    1. Thanks for the encouragement, Angela!! Wow, a 5k, that's impressive! I used to run in high school (on the track team), but I always hated it. 🙂 I admire those who do it, though!

    1. The book does offer exercises, but I am very much sold on T-Tapp! Thanks for mentioning that, Jennifer! I'm hoping to get back into T-Tapp soon, but right now I've been using the free exercise here: http://fit2b.us/ts-totally-transverse/

I've been doing it for three weeks now, though, and I haven't noticed much improvement. I'm considering going back to the tummy workout on one of the T-Tapp DVD's. I can't remember what it's called, but it's the one where she does the organs in place thing. 🙂
