A Sewing Heritage

We enjoyed a nice visit this weekend with my mom and my brother’s five children. I am really blessed to have such a sweet mother.

While I was sewing Saturday afternoon I began to think about how sewing is a family tradition for us. All of the women on my mom’s side of the family sew. When Mom and her two sisters and my grandma would get together they would always have a lot of sewing projects to work on. Being from Texas, iced tea and Mississippi Mud Bars would always be involved. And sometimes candy corn! It was a festive time of patterns and fabric and sewing machines going.

I was always thankful to have a mom who sewed for me. My friends were always amazed that my mom had made the clothing I had on. Somehow it just seemed special. I didn’t learn to sew clothing until after I married, and I really enjoy it (my husband knows that a really special treat for me is a trip to the fabric store!). Now I am teaching my daughters to sew, and passing the legacy on to the next generation.

The above two quilts were the first and only quilts I’ve made so far. They are crib size, and I made them while I was expecting my second baby. I used scraps that I had on hand and I just tied both of them. The one with the large squares looks very much like a beginner made it, as the squares don’t line up! But my girls think it is beautiful, and love to use it with their dolls.

My grandmother made this fan quilt for me years ago. She made one for each of the granddaughters.
This quilt was given to me on my wedding day by my grandmother. She made one for each of the older grandchildren as a wedding gift. It is very special to me because she made it. She used scraps from clothing made for different family members throughout the years, which made it seem even more special (I even found fabric from some dresses I had in the past).
