Essential Oil Air Freshener (Homemade and Natural)
Essential oil air freshener is easy to make yourself! This all natural air freshener uses just a few ingredients and takes minutes to make.
When we started making a transition from conventional cleaning products to more natural products, one of the first things to go was air freshener.
We discovered that artificial scents and perfumes can contain harmful chemicals and can actually pollute the air inside your home.
Synthetic fragrances can create allergic reactions, breathing difficulties, and migraines, for just a few examples of negative side effects.
And here’s something even more alarming to consider from this article by Dr. Axe:
According to the Breast Cancer Fund, when it comes to the prevention of cancer, avoiding synthetic fragrance is one of the main ways to help yourself. That’s because the dangers of synthetic scents include hormone-disrupting phthalates and synthetic musks.
That’s enough reason for me to avoid synthetic fragrances!

So, if synthetic fragrances aren’t the best, what can we do? My favorite way to scent our home is with our essential oil diffuser.
Also, I love having houseplants around whenever possible. They’re great for cleaning the air!
If you want to burn candles, beeswax candles with lead-free wicks are one of the best choices.
But what about when you just want something to spray around the room to quickly scent the air? Homemade essential oil air freshener to the rescue!
This homemade natural air freshener is easy to make and just uses a few basic ingredients.

How to Make Homemade Air Freshener
One of the best things about making your own homemade essential oil air freshener is that it’s quick and easy!
Here’s all you do:
- Add the vodka and essential oils to the spray bottle, using a funnel if necessary.
- Swirl the essential oil mixture around a bit to combine the oil and the alcohol.
- Add 1 cup water to spray bottle, put on the lid, and shake to mix.
- Before each use, shake the bottle to mix the ingredients.
- Spray into the air to freshen the air.
Just a note, this air freshener is not going to be as strong as a synthetic, artificial air freshener will be.
My recipe calls for about 20 drops of essential oils, but you can try more if it doesn’t seem strong enough.
I’ve seen other recipes that used closer to 50 or 60 drops. It’s all about how strong you want the scent to be.
Also, I’m making a citrus mint air freshener for this recipe, but there are so many other scent combinations you could try!
Natural Air Freshener Scent Combinations
Here’s a list of other scent combinations you could try for this essential oil air freshener:
- wild orange, lemon, and lime
- lemon and lavender
- wild orange, cinnamon, and clove

What does the vodka do for the mixture? Can I leave it out? Thank you for sharing at Best of the Weekend!
The alcohol helps the essential oils and water to mix together and also causes the scent to last longer. You can leave it out, or you can also substitute with rubbing alcohol, witch hazel, or even real vanilla extract. Hope that helps!
I didn’t know that about synthetic fragrances, thanks for posting on the Homestead Blog Hop!
