Trim Healthy Mama Update

Recently, someone asked me if I was still doing Trim Healthy Mama.  I realized that I haven’t mentioned it in awhile.  And the reason is because I haven’t been losing any weight or even inches with it!
When I make Fat Stripping Frappas for myself and my husband, I give the kids a small portion in these little cups (found at the discount grocery store!).
Fat Stripping Frappa (one of my favorite drinks!)
I only had about 20 pounds I was hoping to lose (weight gained during 5 pregnancies that is still hanging on). And so far I’ve lost 5.  But that’s it!
And it could have something to do with the fact that occasionally I get busy and forget to plan my THM meals well, and then I end up eating something with more carbs than what I had planned. And I’ve been under an insane amount of stress lately, which I know doesn’t help.
I’ve never been a big eater; in fact I usually view eating as a “necessary evil.”  I was a size 0-4 when we married (15 years ago) partly because I just never ate very much.  Not because I worried about my weight, but just because I wasn’t hungry.  I’m always forgetting to eat.
And here may be another of my problems.  My husband thinks I don’t eat enough, which is causing my body to hang onto fat, thinking it may not get more food intake–kind of a “starvation mode” thing.  So, I need to do a better job of planning meals and snacks, and then remembering to eat them!

My favorite lunch, Fuel-Pull Salad (my husband loves it, too.)
Sandwiches on Ezekiel sprouted bread and Beanitos (gluten-free chips) for a special date night at the lake (and, yes, I just  noticed there’s a cigarette butt in the picture–it’s not mine, I promise!).  🙂

Despite the fact that I haven’t lost any weight recently, I still LOVE Trim Healthy Mama!  This way of eating isn’t really a diet for us.  My husband and I were already headed this direction, and we feel this is a healthier way of eating.  So, we plan to continue.  It’s just part of what we do.
For my husband’s birthday earlier this month, he requested a “healthy” birthday cake. The kids groaned, thinking dismally about the unappetizing cake I was probably going to make. I decided on the Special Occasion Chocolate Cake (in the book), and boy, were we all surprised by this recipe!!
The frosting didn’t spread very well, but maybe if I had done it differently it would have worked out better. But it was so incredibly delicious!
It wasn’t at all dry, like some other gluten-free cakes I’ve made.  Other baked-goods I’ve made with coconut flour have been dry, but this cake was very moist and totally yummy.
We stored it in the fridge the night after the birthday party, and my husband and I had it for breakfast the next morning!  It was full of protein (and sugar free), so we figured, why not!?
So, even though I need to rethink some things and change things up a bit with the plan (making sure to alternate fuel sources regularly) and do better at planning meals and snacks, I’m still very happy.
I also need to start exercising.  We have a rebounder sitting just a few feet away from my desk, and I need to remember to go jump on it!
And, I forgot to mention that eating THM-style has totally eliminated all the blood sugar issues I was having!
For years I’ve struggled with low blood sugar.  And even though I knew to stay away from sugary breakfasts and snacks, and to make sure to have protein (like cheese) with a piece of fruit, I still had a horrible time with low blood sugar.
At a certain time in the afternoon I could often be found feeling confused and tired and shaky.  And sometimes with a headache.  But that doesn’t happen to me anymore!  I’m so thankful.
Sometimes I do “cheat,” by eating dessert at a friend’s house or a church dinner, or even making sugary treats with my kids just for fun.
Even though I occasionally allow myself to eat these things, I usually try to only eat a tiny bit (mostly so it doesn’t mess up my blood sugar).
One day I’d like for us to get to the point where all of our family desserts are healthy ones (and then we’d just enjoy the sugary stuff at special times with friends and family). Still working on that!  And I never take healthy desserts to church meals anymore, because I did that for years and I endured a lot of jokes and criticism for it (mostly from teenage guys and men!).
Hopefully, one day I’ll be able to write a post about how I’ve reached my goal weight–just 15 pounds away! But until then, I’ll continue to enjoy my THM lifestyle–along with healthy chocolate!
Are you doing THM?  Have you lost weight with it?  And have you tried the Special Occasion Chocolate Cake (if not, you must!)?

  1. Three years ago I decided it was time to loose weight and I managed after 18 months to loose 40 pounds (18kgs) – I went down the slow and steady route rather than attempting to do it fast. This has worked well for me and now after 18 months after reaching my goal, I have been able to maintain that weight. However I have decided to buy THM to see if I can find some further inspiration to keep that weight gone forever. I feel heaps better, have far more energy and no longer fall asleep in the afternoons!! From everything I read, its so important to not loose it fast – almost everyone who does, puts it all back on plus more within 5 years – it isn't a race, its a lifestyle change and one that you need to live by for the rest of your life.

    Blessings

  2. I'm glad to hear that it is going well for you, Joy! Your cake looks delicious! If it tastes anything like it looks, I'm guessing it didn't last long. 🙂

  3. Hi Joy,
I've been THM since the first week of September. I've lost around twenty pounds. I feel better already. I've been rereading my book. You might not be getting enough E meals or it might be time for a fuel cycle. I encourage you to check out the facebook THM group and to reread the book.

Don't give up! You'll make it.
    Blessings,

  4. I started on THM end of March and I have lost 40lbs so far! It definitely has NOT come off steadily like I imagined but instead a bunch a once and then nothing for weeks. I have been stalled out at 15lbs left to go for 3 months now, which is frustrating, but like you both Hubby and I feel so much better and my energy level is so much higher! I finally buckled down this week and made a complete food list, including snacks and drinks and I am trying hard to stick to it (I tend to get so busy that I don't prepare anything ahead of time and then I'm STARVING and snack on things that I shouldn't- like a bunch of handfuls of nuts!! So I'm trying to be more careful with it now. I think when you have a lot to loose it's easier- but as you get closer to goal you've got to put more work into it! =) Hope you and I both see that 15 come off SOON =)

    1. Great job on the 40 lbs!!! That's what I need to do is make a detailed meal and snack list and put some more thought into it (with alternating the different types of meals). And, yes, I hope we both lose our 15 unwanted lbs!! 🙂

  5. Joy, I have been doing THM and am pleased to say that I have lost 15lbs in the first 8 weeks. Except unlike you, I have about 50 lbs to loose, not 20. I think that I read that when you have a lot of weight to lose it often starts to come off faster in the beginning. I am not excercising with the exception of a weekly Wednesday walk with our pastor's wife. That's it.
I love the food and it wasn't too hard to change over from the diet we already ate. My largest struggle has been baking for my family. At this point I'm still making cookies and other goodies for my kids and husband. I tend to cave when those are in the house. I may only have one cookie instead of 4 but even the one doesn't help the weight loss.
I certainly feel better and have more energy though. In fact I just told my husband this morning how happy I was to have found this book!
I pray that you'll be able to perservere through the lull and reach your goal weight!
    Blessings,
    Heather

    1. Wow, congratulations, Heather!!! 15 lbs is great!

I know just what you mean about baked goods. I'm blessed to have two older daughters who do a lot of the family baking. But it is such a temptation to me when those delicious whole-grain chocolate chip cookies are sitting around! 🙂

Blessings to you, and I pray that we both reach our goal weight! 🙂

  6. I've tried making a few things that had stevia in them and they always taste so awful! :-/ Is it just because I'm pregnant and we aren't used to it or maybe I'm getting the wrong one? After the baby is born in December I'm going to try and do it, though I'm going to use more whole foods as I'm very sold on them! 😀 I won't have much, if any weight to loose but my family could use the health benefits. Your cake looks delicious! So does the Full-Pull Salad! <3 Blessings to you all! <3

    1. So much depends on the type of stevia! Some is good and some is very bitter. I was so happy with the NuNaturals, but they changed the formula and now I don't like it. So we're trying out different brands to find one we like the best.

Yes, I agree about using the whole foods. If you follow Serene's guidelines, they are very healthy and good-for-you (Goat's milk kefir, sourdough bread, plenty of coconut oil, etc.). You're blessed with your thinness! 🙂

The cake is so delicious–I'm looking for another excuse to make one! Blessings to you!
