Plan to Be Flexible {Giveaway}

I have to admit that I usually love homeschool planning. We’ve been homeschooling since the very beginning, and our oldest child is 15, so that’s a lot of years planning out learning activities. And I’ve always loved it.

But not this year. For some reason, I just couldn’t get into it, and I couldn’t figure out how to do everything I was hoping to accomplish with all the different ages and learning levels we have right now.

Also, I’m an amazing schedule-maker. I can make impressive color-coded Excel spreadsheets (which I love). But the problem is, life never goes according to my schedule. Things will be humming right along and suddenly someone gets sick. Or the basement gets flooded. Or the oven breaks and the toilet overflows. Or any number of things can happen to wreck my perfectly-designed schedule!

Enter Alicia Kazsuk’s wonderful book, Plan to Be Flexible!

“Instead of creating another schedule, this homeschooling approach focuses on a key element: the concept of a rhythm…rhythm-based homeschooling still provides the comfort of a schedule, but unlike a schedule, rhythm works within the realities of an imperfect, unpredictable day. Rhythm is an achievable, grace-filled mindset that sets us free from the ‘have-tos’ and ‘musts’ of scheduling.”

“If you get nothing else out of this book, my heart is that you will catch the homeschooling freedom found in rhythms. It is an incredible perspective that can radically change the climate and condition of your school. And I believe it is one of the secrets of homeschooling that no one talks about.”

Alicia walks you through the steps to planning your school year and making decisions based on the needs of your individual family and each individual child. She also has a valuable list of homeschool resources (many of them free) in the back of her book.

“In the fall, as we begin the slow transition to a traditional school rhythm, the world outside will reflect this pattern. Deciduous trees slowly begin the process of returning to winter hibernation, and the temperature outside begins to have a decided chill. There will be cooler days as autumn draws nigh, interspersed with the occasional warm spell. The shift from summer to winter is a slow and gradual one, reminding us that our return to scheduled learning can be slow and gradual too.”

I so much appreciated Alicia’s encouragement to look at all of life as a learning opportunity, and also to give yourself grace on the hard days.

“If we’ve had a tough day and not much ‘school’ has gotten done, the kids and I snuggle around a good book. It centers us as a family, grounds us back to our homeschool commitments, and (a nice benefit) it imparts an incredible amount of information. I find that reading aloud is like a soothing balm on those rough days.”
