A New Season

“To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.”  ~Ecclesiastes 3:1

I love fall!  It may be my favorite season.  Saturday we did a little decorating and also made some sugar cookies in the shape of leaves, apples, and pumpkins.  They weren’t on my diet, but I ate some anyway.  ðŸ™‚  I wanted to enjoy celebrating the new season.

I seem to be in a new season of motherhood, too.
One of my older girls (age 12) asked if we could make sugar cookies, which is a tradition I started quite a few years ago when my first couple of children were very small.  At the change of every season, we made sugar cookies.
Saturday I was very tired.  It felt like a huge effort to do anything!  So I told my daughter to go ahead and mix up the dough.
She not only mixed up the dough, but she and her two sisters and two brothers made them from start to finish, all by themselves!
I just showed up to take a few photos.  And eat a couple of cookies.  ðŸ™‚
They turned out absolutely perfect.
And once again, I have mixed feelings about all of this.  What a blessing it is to have older children who can do so many things on their own!  It takes a huge weight of concern and worry and care off of my shoulders.
And yet, I feel a wistful, nostalgic feeling when I think of the fact that each day they are growing up and becoming more and more independent.  When I look back at pictures of them when they were little, I might even brush away a tear or two.  It all goes so fast.
But mostly I’m just thankful.  Thankful for the blessing of being their mother.  Thankful for the abilities they’re acquiring.  Thankful for the shared memories we have together.  Looking forward to the memories we will make together in the future.
Enjoy your little ones, Mama.  It all goes by so fast.

  1. The fall cookies look festive and also delicious. Of course you went off your diet for one . . . or two – they were fresh from the oven. And your crunch on a cookie was sharing in an activity with your still children, children.

    1. Thank you, Karen! I appreciate your way of looking at things…yes, my eating a few cookies was sharing in an activity with my children. That makes it sound quite noble and selfless. 🙂

  2. Good Morning, Joy.
    This is all so true…
Our oldest daughter just turned 23 and our "baby" is 5. Sigh…

    The cookies are beautiful!
I have the cutters on my counter as I type. But was wondering if you have a favorite dough recipe? And could you share your frosting recipe if you get a quick moment. I love that it does not look too thick.

Fall is my favorite as well!

    1. Hi Kristin!

Wow, 23! My oldest is 14, and I still can't believe that. 🙂

Our dough recipe is in a favorite cookbook. Maybe I can share that recipe sometime. The frosting (decorating icing) recipe is 2 cups confectioner's sugar, 2 Tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons warm water, and 1 tablespoon light corn syrup (we never have this on hand, so we just substitute honey). Hope that's helpful!
