A Day Out With My Husband

Yesterday we needed to run some errands. I had an appointment for a long-overdue eye exam, and that didn’t seem like the kind of thing that would work well with children along. My wonderful mother was able to come and enjoy the afternoon with her grandchildren while we went out alone. How strange it seemed to be able to walk together, just the two of us, holding hands! Usually there is a little one to carry or little hands to hold.
We picked up a huge box full of library books, including the next Little House on the Prairie book I’ve been reading aloud to the children (we read them a couple of years ago together, but now we are enjoying them again). The pile also had many other picture books and even a sewing book for me. And yes, we did make it to the fabric store, where we picked up some new dress fabric for the girls, apron fabric for me, a yard of pink flowered cotton for one of my daughter’s sewing projects, and some flannel with bugs on it for some little boy pajama pants.
My husband surprised me with a meal at an Italian restaurant we used to frequent when we were dating. It’s a neat little place in an old refurbished house, with low lighting, a fireplace, quiet jazz music playing in the background, and good pizza! We got a little medium-sized pizza and shared it.
We got home late, the children all in bed trying in vain to sleep. I think they were waiting for us to return! It’s true that there’s no place like home!
