Have you ever looked into the mirror and wondered what happened to the woman you used to be? This isn’t always a bad thing, since motherhood can be very sanctifying. But sometimes you’d just like to be able to look in the mirror and smile back at the reflection you see. Here are 4 mom makeover tips to help you enhance your natural beauty.
Some of the most selfless people I know are moms. They put their husbands, kids, and families first, often forgetting to meet their own needs. They are hard workers, getting up before the family, cooking meals, cleaning, organizing, and just being there for everybody else.
It’s beautiful to see a woman selflessly serving others.
But the healthiest moms I know are the ones who also make time to take care of their own needs. This doesn’t mean we should be constantly preoccupied with external beauty or material things. There can be balance here.
There’s also room for differing opinions on this subject. I know many women who don’t wear makeup (or cut their hair). Some of them have a personal conviction against it, and others just don’t care for it. If this is you, please don’t take offense at this post. I’m not suggesting that every woman should wear makeup. I’m mostly writing this for those who already enjoy using makeup as a way to enhance their God-given natural beauty.
I hope this post will inspire you to update your look in a way that works for you!
4 Mom Makeover Tips
Sometimes we get stuck in a rut. We keep the same hairstyle for years, even when it looks out of date. We wear the same shade of lipstick even though it isn’t the best color for our complexion.
I have the advantage of being the mother of two teenage daughters, and they keep me updated on what’s in and what’s not. It wasn’t a big surprise to me that most of what I wear isn’t “in.” 🙂 I have my own classic style, and my goal isn’t to look like a teenager.
But I do want to look my best, so I do what I can with what I’ve got.
Here are 4 tips to help you update your mom look:
1. Invest in some new underwear.
Yes, I did just write that. Have you ever looked in your underwear drawer and noticed the neglect there? I mean, who’s going to see them, right? Well, when you have children helping you fold laundry, nothing is sacred! 🙂 And besides, if you’re married, there’s your husband to consider.
Try to fit some new underwear into the budget! Go through your drawers and see what needs to be replaced.
Another tip is to have a professional bra fitting if you’re well-endowed. Seriously, this makes a huge difference in how your clothes fit! Years ago (during my last pregnancy) I started using this fitting guide, and ordering maternity/nursing bras from their website. It’s also a great source for regular bras (although they’re expensive, which means I don’t own very many and I keep them for years!).
2. Get a new hairstyle/color.
There’s nothing like getting a new hairstyle to update your look. Getting some highlights or new color can really brighten you up also.
I cut my own hair, so I don’t really take my own advice here (and as a curly girl, there are only so many styles that work on my hair!), but I’m just about to take the plunge and get my hair highlighted, I think. I can’t wait!
3. Get your nails done.
I rarely paint my fingernails, but I keep my toenails painted all spring and summer long. There’s just something so feminine and cheerful about painted nails! And I love that you can now get more natural nail polish!
4. Update your makeup.
My goal with makeup is usually to look like I’m not wearing any. I just like to even out my skin tone and enhance what’s already there with a little bit of eyeliner, mascara, and lipstick or lip gloss.
Several months ago, I realized I had been wearing the wrong shade of foundation for my skin tone. I had been wearing the same color for years, and it never occurred to me that my skin might have changed. It never hurts to evaluate what you’re doing and be open to change!
If you’re not sure which colors you need or how to apply your makeup, you can always go to a makeup counter and have them find your colors. Sephora is also a great place to get help with colors and product options.
If you really want to do something special as part of your makeover, take some time to find your signature scent. Go to a store that sells perfume, and find a scent that you love. Something that just makes you say, “This scent is so me!”
