The Best Sewing Quotes to Inspire You
I love sewing! There’s nothing like spending a day in the sewing room making something handmade for my home or family. If you’re also a fan of all things sewing, here’s a list of some sewing quotes to inspire you. I’ve also thrown in some fun quilting quotes for good measure.
Best Sewing Quotes
I absolutely love sewing, and have so many happy memories of hours spent on various sewing projects over the years.
I didn’t really do any sewing until I got married in my early 20s. When I started staying at home full-time after having our first baby, I really wanted to learn and start practicing “old-fashioned” homemaking skills.
Things like baking from scratch, DIY household projects, and making some of our own clothes all held a great fascination and appeal.
Maybe part of it was simply nostalgia for days gone by, but I don’t think that’s all there was to it.
There is just something incredibly satisfying about starting from scratch—whether in cooking or making clothes—and ending up with a handmade project that you can look at and say, “I made that!”
Many of my early sewing projects included a lot of trial and error. I had to largely teach myself, and there was truly quite a bit of a learning curve!
But as I continued sewing and gained confidence and skill, I was soon making all kinds of clothing such as dresses for myself and skirts for my girls.
I loved reading good books about sewing. And watching instructional videos teaching new skills and techniques was something I relished.
Some of those books provided material for these quotes about sewing.
I truly hope you enjoy reading these inspirational quotes as much as I had putting them together!

Famous Quotes About Sewing
This first category of sewing quotes includes some quotes from famous authors or that are pretty well-known, at least in the world of sewing!
So she made her wedding gown herself, sewing into it the tender hopes and innocent romances of a girlish heart.
Louisa May Alcott
“I am certain that a Sewing Machine would relieve as much human suffering as a hundred Lunatic Asylums, and possibly a good deal more.”
Margaret Atwood
“Take your needle, my child, and work at your pattern; it will come out a rose by and by. Life is like that – one stitch at a time taken patiently and the pattern will come out all right like the embroidery.”
Oliver Wendell Holmes
“But the object that most drew my attention, in the mysterious package, was a certain affair of fine red cloth, much worn and faded. There were traces about it of gold embroidery, which, however, was greatly frayed and defaced; so that none, or very little, of the glitter was left. It had been wrought, as was easy to perceive, with wonderful skill of needlework; and the stitch (as I am assured by ladies conversant with such mysteries) gives evidence of a now forgotten art, not to be recovered even by the process of picking out the threads. This rag of scarlet cloth,—for time and wear and a sacrilegious moth, had reduced it to little other than a rag,—on careful examination, assumed the shape of a letter. It was the capital letter A.”
Nathaniel Hawthorne
Yesterday was a quiet day spent in teaching, sewing, and writing in my little room, which is very cozy, with a light and fire.
Louisa May Alcott
“You can sew your own curtain to remain hidden from the dark side of the world.”
Munia Khan
“If you don’t have experience sewing, start with that, because that will inform what you are able to design.”
Tim Gunn
Meg sat upon her cushion, sewing daintily with her white hands, and looking as fresh and sweet as a rose in her pink dress among the green.
Louisa May Alcott
“I do NOT like patchwork,” said Anne dolefully, hunting out her workbasket and sitting down before a little heap of red and white diamonds with a sigh. “I think some kinds of sewing would be nice; but there’s no scope for imagination in patchwork. It’s just one little seam after another and you never seem to be getting anywhere. But of course I’d rather be Anne of Green Gables sewing patchwork than Anne of any other place with nothing to do but play.”
Lucy Maud Montgomery
“It is a token of healthy and gentle characteristics, when women of high thoughts and accomplishments love to sew; especially as they are never more at home with their hearts than while so occupied.”
Nathaniel Hawthorne
As they sat sewing together, Jo discovered how much improved her sister Meg was, how well she could talk, how much she knew about good, womanly impulses, thoughts, and feelings, how happy she was in husband and children, and how much they were all doing for each other.

Jane Austen was successful in everything that she attempted with her fingers… Her needlework both plain and ornamental was excellent, and might almost have put a sewing machine to shame. She was considered especially great in satin stitch. She spent much time in these occupations, and some of her merriest talk was over clothes which she and her companions were making, sometimes for themselves, and sometimes for the poor…. the same hand which painted so exquisitely with the pen could work as delicately with the needle.
