Traditional eggnog recipes use raw eggs, but I prefer this cooked eggnog version. It’s so good, and perfectly festive for the holidays!

Why We Love This Recipe

  • Uses Real Food Ingredients: If you’re looking for a healthy eggnog recipe, give this one a try! It uses healthy real food ingredients like milk, maple syrup, and eggs.
  • Delicious: We love the flavor of this homemade eggnog!
  • Festive: I always think of eggnog around Christmas and New Year’s, so that’s when we usually make this easy recipe. Served with whipped cream and a cinnamon stick, it’s such a festive drink!

Ingredients

Find the full list of ingredients, amounts, and instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Eggs: This recipe uses 7 eggs!
  • Milk: I usually use whole milk in this recipe.
  • Maple Syrup: Pure maple syrup is the healthy sweetener in this easy eggnog recipe.
  • Vanilla: Use store-bought or homemade vanilla extract.
  • Whipped Cream: Make your own homemade whipped cream for the best flavor! In a pinch, you could also use store-bought whipped topping. You’ll need 2 cups of whipped cream.
  • Nutmeg: For a traditional flavor, use nutmeg, but you can also use my Christmas Spice Mix.

How to Make Cooked Eggnog

1. Whisk together the eggs, milk, maple syrup, nutmeg, and salt in a large saucepan or Dutch oven.

2. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and will coat a spoon, about 1 hour.

3. Remove pan from heat and pour the mixture into a bowl, and add vanilla, stirring to combine. Refrigerate for several hours.

4. When you are ready to serve, whip the cream and fold it into the eggnog. Garnish with a few shakes of cinnamon or nutmeg.

Ingredients

  • 7 eggs
  • 1/2 gallon milk, (8 cups)
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoons sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • cinnamon, or nutmeg, for garnish

Instructions

  • Whisk together the eggs, milk, maple syrup, nutmeg, and salt in a large saucepan or Dutch oven.
  • Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and will coat a spoon, about 1 hour (my kids like to take turns stirring, which they enjoy–and it usually doesn't take quite an hour).
  • Remove pan from heat, pour the mixture into a bowl, and then add the vanilla, stirring to combine. Refrigerate for several (2-3) hours, or until chilled.
  • After eggnog is chilled, whip the heavy cream. To whip the cream, put it in the bowl of a stand mixer (or a large mixing bowl) and beat until soft peaks form. Fold the whipped cream into the chilled eggnog. Garnish with a few shakes of nutmeg or cinnamon.
