Redeeming Childbirth Book Review

After I got married, I couldn’t wait to have a baby!  I had been longing for the fulfillment of my motherhood dream for almost twenty years, and when I found out I was expecting, ten months after our wedding, I was thrilled.  I eagerly devoured every book I could find on the topic of pregnancy and birth.  I went to the library and checked out piles of books, and I also borrowed books from my midwife.

I learned so much from those books, from how to have a healthy diet to herbal remedies for common pregnancy discomforts.  I learned methods for coping with the pain in labor, and different positions for birth. And even though I did read a few books written by Christians on the topic of birth, there really wasn’t much about being spiritually prepared for the experience.  No one told me that my birth could glorify God no matter where it took place, and that it could actually become a spiritual milestone that brings a woman closer to God.  I was physically and mentally prepared for my five births, but I could have been even more prepared spiritually.

After birthing five babies, I’ve read many books on this subject.  And until Redeeming Childbirth, I had never read one that actually draws you to worship the Lord as you labor and give birth.

Redeeming Childbirth is not a book just about natural birth, although there are many God-glorifying testimonies to what He has done in and through them.  Redeeming Childbirth is more than just how you decide to birth your baby.  It’s about your intentions, your motives, your heart attitudes and your relationships.  In this very special season in a woman’s life when she is with child and preparing for motherhood, there are many opportunities for growth–in relationships as well as spiritually.”

“Regardless of how you birth your baby, the point of Redeeming Childbirth is to take your journey toward motherhood to the Lord beforehand.  Prepare you heart, soul, mind, marriage, family, and relationship with Christ for this experience.  Grow in your relationship with Him, and seek His mission for your life and this short but powerful journey you are on.  Allow the holy Scriptures to encourage you and equip you for birth and motherhood.  Pray and ask God to reveal His mission for you.  Discuss it with your husband, and together seek God.  Then obey what you feel He is calling you to.”

I wish this book had been available when I was expecting my first baby!  I’m so excited to be able to use it for mentoring my daughters and other women.  Birth does not have to be a fearful thing.  And it doesn’t matter where you end up giving birth.  No matter if you are in a hospital, birth center, or at home, you can glorify God and experience His presence right where you are!

The message of Redeeming Childbirth is Christian women showing grace and love to each other, and supporting each other in this life-changing event, as they encourage one another to look to the Lord for their strength.
