Billy and Blaze Week

This has been a week for horses and ponies! These pictures are of the horses and ponies that have lived in the pasture around our house for the past few years. We have really enjoyed having them so close (basically right in our front and back yards!).
We started by reading the book “Billy and Blaze”, which is a classic book about a boy and his pony named Blaze.

Here are the lapbooks we made. The idea and the printed pages for the books came from Homeschool Share. They have lots of ideas for lapbooks, including some on character qualities (we recently did a book on honor). This is what the book covers look like:
This is what the inside of the book looks like:
There are lots of smaller books inside, and flaps that open to reveal other things. This flap opens to reveal a Bible verse:
Underneath the flap:
This shows the picture underneath the “extension” (the red page):
The book you see above, “Different Breeds of Horses”, opens to reveal an accordion book that shows different photographs of horses:
The back flap of each horse picture tells information about that particular horse:
These are very fun to make and the children really enjoy looking back at their work (which helps them to remember what they learned).

  1. Hi, Joy! Your blog is absolutely AMAZING!!! I am so happy to have found it (through a link from Raising Homemakers). We've been homeschooling for 17 years and have 3 graduates already – two are Marines. We have another 3 to school and the youngest being a toddler. I LOVED your post, "Keeping Little Ones Busy." I can't wait to incorporate your ideas for our little one. Anyway, I am very interested in the lapbook project as well, but don't know where or how to begin. The website didn't seem to be of much help to me. Do they have a catalog? It looks simple enough to make, but I'm terrible at thinking up ideas. I just need something to get me started and then I can take off. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch! From one Curly Girl to another (Love Lorraine Massey's book 🙂

    1. Hi Curly Girl! Thanks so much for your kind words about my blog, and for sharing about your family.

I'd be glad to help you with the lapbook project if I can. What kind of help were you looking for? Here is a direct link to the Billy and Blaze lapbook pages that you can download:

Then you just take a plain file folder and fold the sides–that makes the lapbook, and you glue your pages inside and outside. The extension page (the red page with the bird picture above) is just a piece of red cardstock taped to the top of the file folder. Here's a link I just found on the Homeschool Share website, called "How to Make a Lapbook":

I hope that's helpful to you! If not, just let me know. 🙂
