This was one of the most fascinating nature study projects we’ve ever done in our homeschool. Here’s how we did our butterfly unit study.

We were so excited when we received this box in the mail one day late in April!

(We used this butterfly garden kit.)

Our Butterfly Unit Study

We watched the caterpillars eat and grow and then turn into a chrysalis.

It was so amazing to watch them turn into butterflies! In the photo below, a Painted Lady butterfly has emerged:

After observing and feeding the butterflies for several days we let them go.

They seemed so happy to fly out of their temporary home, and they all flew way up into the sky. We saw several of them around the yard later that day.

We also made lapbooks (a file folder turned into a “book” full of information on a certain topic) to document our study.

Here is the front of the lapbooks we made:

A great resource for making lapbooks is homeschoolshare, which is where I got all of the pages for these lapbooks. We’ve done several lapbooks from here, and it makes it so easy, as it is already put together for you.
