Simple Sewing Tools
Yes, you can sew without spending a lot of money! We bought my sewing machine shortly after our marriage. I knew that I wanted a Singer, because that’s what Mom had always used, and hers never gave her any trouble (even though she used it for many years). My machine is a basic model with just a few basic stitches and nothing fancy about it. But I have used it successfully for about 12 years now, and that’s with almost daily heavy use for most of those years (the past year or so it has seen a bit less use, as our family has grown and my time is in shorter supply!).
I do not own a serger, but finish my seams with the old fashioned pinking method, just like my grandmother did (and she was a very accomplished seamstress). For some projects I have also used French seams and flat-felled seams.
Below are some of my favorite tools, all of which are pretty inexpensive:
The first item is called the Turn It All, and I’ve used this so much. It’s a group of tubes and rods that fit inside the tubes, and you can use them to turn just about anything tube-shaped in your sewing. Things like ties, belts, etc.
The second item is my Fiskars pinking shears. I use these so often to finish seams so they won’t ravel.
Then I have my regular Gingher sewing shears and a pair of applique scissors that I also use very often. I also love my magnetic pin cushion and Bobbin Saver, which keeps all my bobbins neat and orderly.
