Why Put Honey On Your Face?

Honey is one of my favorite natural foods. But did you know that it’s also very nourishing for your skin?

According to this article:

Historically, honey has been recognised around the world for its healing properties with records of its therapeutic use dating back to 2000 B.C. The ancient Greeks and Egyptians, for example, used honey to treat skin wounds and burns by applying topically on the skin.

Honey has so many antibacterial properties that unspoiled pots of honey have even been found in the tombs of Egyptian kings!

Honey (especially manuka honey) has been shown to be beneficial for a wide range of skin conditions, including acne.

DIY Honey Face Mask

Lately I’ve been making my own DIY honey face mask using manuka honey.

I just love the way my skin feels after using this mask.

Manuka honey is considered a medicinal honey, and it’s kind of expensive, but I like to keep some on hand.

Several years ago I bought this container of raw manuka honey, and we keep it in our natural medicine cabinet.

It’s reportedly very good for treating burns, and I’ve had occasion to try this out myself on a second degree burn I got a few years ago. It worked really well!

This mask uses just a few basic ingredients. You can use manuka honey or any raw honey you have available.

If you’re using honey other than manuka, it’s a good idea to add a few drops of tea tree oil to it to help preserve it.

From what I’ve read, manuka won’t require the tea tree oil, but you can add some if you like. (I have acne-prone skin, so I use a lot of tea tree oil!)

Ingredients for DIY Honey Face Mask

How to Make Your Own Facial Mask

Get a small glass container to put your mask in.

I found this shallow, wide-mouth Mason jar to be the perfect size for this job.

Add the honey to the jar:

Then add the jojoba oil:

Then add the sea salt:

And the tea tree oil if you’re using it:

Stir it all together in your jar, and you’re finished!

This doesn’t require refrigeration. I just keep it on my bathroom counter top.

How to Use It

Whenever you’re ready to use your honey mask, just scoop some out of the jar and apply to your skin.

I usually leave it on my face for several minutes (anywhere from 5-20) and then rinse it off with lukewarm water.
