There are so many fun things to enjoy at Christmas time! From sparkling lights and festive music, to delicious food and special family traditions, there is a lot to inspire holiday cheer.
One activity that many families enjoy this time of year is watching Christmas movies.
Enjoying free movies is just one of the things you can do to make fun Christmas memories without spending money. But finding clean movies for the whole family to watch together can sometimes be a difficult task.

We enjoy our Amazon prime membership to get free and fast shipping on Amazon’s massive marketplace.
But a few years ago I found out that another great perk of a Prime membership is access to hundreds of free movies and shows through Amazon Prime Video!
We recognize that not every family has the same standards about movies considered suitable for family viewing.
To help you and your family find wholesome movies this holiday season, I’ve put together a list of free family-friendly Christmas movies on Amazon Prime Video.
Free Christmas-Themed Family-Friendly Movies on Amazon Prime Video
There are a lot of free Christmas movies on Amazon Prime Video, but not all of them could be considered family friendly.
The movies listed here are either ones my family has watched, or ones that are considered appropriate for the whole family based on Amazon customer reviews and movie review sites.
Please note the movies listed below (unless otherwise noted) are all free for Prime members as of the time of this writing.
This charmingly pleasant story features the hardships and adventures of a poor yet close Depression-era family of five children headed by a single dad. It’s a heart-warming story and has many 5-star reviews on Amazon!
This Christmas movie is about a figure skater who has an accident and undergoes rehabilitation. There is some romance (but nothing racy) as along the way she meets a guy and develops a relationship with him and his young daughter.
A Norman Rockwell Christmas Story
This shorter movie centers on a small-town family in 1940s America. Based on a painting by Norman Rockwell, it starts off a little slow but has a good message.
Mandie and the Forgotten Christmas
This movie is one in a series inspired by the books of author Lois Gladys Leppard. It centers on the adventures of Mandie, a student at an all-girls’ school in the early 1900s, including a mystery in the school’s attic.
This is probably the most-well known Christmas movie of all time. Set in the 1940s in small-town America, George Bailey is battling discouragement and struggling with the purpose of his life. With the help of a bumbling guardian angel, George comes to see that one person truly can make a huge difference in the lives of many others.
Based on the well-known work by Charles Dickens, the story of Ebeneezer Scrooge has some parallels to It’s a Wonderful Life. Scrooge starts off as a bitter and selfish man but with some supernatural help comes to realize that showing practical love for others (including the poor) is one of the most important reasons we are put here on earth.
This movie centers on a wealthy single man who tries to buy or “borrow” a family so he can have a Christmas celebration. Some reviewers note that it has a low-budget feel but the story is still wholesome and uplifting.Christmas at Plum Creek (Little House on the Prairie Season 1 Episode 15)
This sweet Christmas story is based on the well-known Little House on the Prairie series of books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Season 1 of the 1970s Little House TV series is available free for viewing on Prime Video. The Christmas show is episode 15 in this season.
An American Girl Story – Maryellen 1955: Extraordinary Christmas
Set in 1950s America, this cute short movie centers on a girl who learns selflessness and sacrifice in caring for others.
Free Christian-Themed Christmas Movies and Shows on Amazon Prime Video
Although all of the free Christmas movies listed above have wholesome themes, for the most part they don’t have an explicitly Christian message.
The free Christmas movies and shows listed below are openly Christian in the stories they tell.
Based on the biblical story of the magi who came from the East to visit the baby Jesus, this movie centers on a “fourth wise man” who learns the true meaning of Christmas. It is not strictly based on the account of Jesus’ birth in the Gospels but keeps with the spirit of the biblical message.
This story features the adventures of Pastor Greg as he prepares for his first Christmas sermon.
This movie features the character “Carol” in the place of Dickens’ Scrooge to present an openly Christian take on the classic Christmas story.
This Christmas-time story presents three generations of a Christian family involved in ministering to those around them. Although there is nothing objectionable, due to some of the themes such as homelessness and addiction, it may be best for ages 12 and up.
Although not a movie, this Advent series by Max Lucado presents the biblical Christmas message in a warm and winsome way.
This documentary discusses Jesus’ earthly father, including his role in the early life of our Lord.
Free Christmas Documentaries on Amazon Prime Video
In addition to really good Christmas movies, there are some excellent free Christmas documentaries on Amazon Prime Video.
This unique Christmas documentary presents a fictional account of life on a Victorian English estate in the 1800s. The amount of work required to prepare for Christmas is really amazing!

This educational and informative documentary presents how the Tudors would have celebrated the twelve days of Christmas.
Saint Nicholas: The Real Story
Many people are unaware that there really was a historical “St. Nick,” Nicholas the Bishop of Myra. This documentary discusses some of the information known about this Christian leader of the 3rd and 4th centuries.
This documentary presents the origins of the beloved Christmas hymn “Silent Night,” including visits to the scenic Austrian villages where this hymn was born.
Rick Steves’ European Christmas
This well-done documentary presents the music and traditions of a European Christmas.

This is not necessarily the best version of the Nutcracker story, but it is free!

The movies below are not currently free, but are worth mentioning as excellent family-friendly Christmas movies.
This is an excellent portrayal of the biblical nativity account. The producers attempted to adhere closely to the biblical narrative. It is a moving and powerful story about the birth of the Messiah!
An imaginative and inspiring Christmas-themed movie. Based on a story by Max Lucado, this story has beautiful scenery set in a small English town.
This is our favorite version of this story.
The Man Who Invented Christmas
This film presents the life of Charles Dickens, author of A Christmas Carol and many other classic works. A few scenes may be too intense for young children, but otherwise this is an excellent movie for family viewing.
Although not strictly a “Christmas movie,” the events in this classic film take place around Christmas time. Starring James Stewart (also featured in It’s a Wonderful Life mentioned above) and Margaret Sullivan, this black-and-white romantic comedy is a feel-good film.
This classic Christmas cartoon features Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the whole Peanuts Gang celebrating the true spirit of the season.
When Calls the Heart: The Greatest Christmas Blessing
Our family has enjoyed the When Calls the Heart series of programs. This particular show is episode 1 in season 6 and can be purchased as an individual program.
Samantha: An American Girl Holiday
This movie based on the character Samantha from the American Girl stories takes place at Christmas time in New York City in the early 1900s. It’s a great family film.
