Gluten-Free Fried Fish Recipe

This gluten-free fried fish recipe is perfect for fresh or frozen fish! Even without gluten, this fish breading is so delicious.

My husband and youngest son went fishing recently. They brought home a nice catch of crappie, and wanted to fry them to have with our family dinner.

We came up with this recipe and it turned out very well! Even my kids who aren’t huge fans of fish enjoyed this gluten-free fish meal.

No one in our family has Celiac Disease or obvious problems digesting gluten.

But I’ve known for some time that gluten sensitivity is related to digestive and overall health issues for a lot of people.

That’s one of the main reasons I prefer to use sourdough rather than regular wheat flour when making bread.

My husband went on a gluten-free diet a couple of years ago when he was facing a health concern. He felt like it helped him at the time, and he continues to go gluten-free as much as possible.

I’ve also been gluten-free for some time to see if that would help with an autoimmune condition.

When we searched for a gluten-free fish coating to use for my husband and son’s catch of fresh fish, the few that we found had unusual ingredients or things we didn’t have on hand.

So we combined parts of different recipes and came up with our own recipe for gluten-free fish breading.

Everyone agreed it turned out to be a winner!

Why You’ll Love This Gluten-Free Fried Fish Recipe

The nice thing about this recipe is that it’s very versatile.

You can use pretty much any type of white fish (crappie, bass, catfish, cod, flounder, etc.) you have on hand.

So far, we’ve used this recipe with crappie, cod and flounder and it’s turned out delicious every time!

If you have a dairy allergy or sensitivity, you can also leave out the milk, or cook some of the fish first without soaking those filets in milk.

You can also use your favorite cooking oil for frying. We really like coconut oil and butter.

You could also use palm shortening or vegetable oil, although we try to avoid vegetable oils due to inflammation concerns.

Gluten-Free Fried Fish Notes

  • You can use almost any white fish for this recipe (crappie, bass, catfish, cod, flounder, etc.).
  • You can also try different seasonings such as rosemary or paprika to add a little variety.
  • If you enjoy fish sandwiches, these would be great served on gluten-free bread.
  • Soaking filets in the milk helps reduce the strong fishy taste that some types of fish have.
  • To make this recipe dairy-free, leave out the milk or try an unsweetened plant or nut milk.
