Thumbprint Cookies

There are some Christmas cookies that are so connected with the holidays that I only make them during that time.

That’s usually the case with chocolate star cookiesChristmas cut-out cookies, and chocolate crinkle cookies.

But for some reason, thumbprint cookies are different.

This is the type of cookie that I love making at any time of year.

When my kids were little, I used to regularly make these healthier whole wheat jam thumbprint cookies.

My kids loved the fact that they had little indentations with jam in the middle!

So even though these are often made at Christmastime, they’re perfect all year long.

This recipe for jam thumbprint cookies is more traditional, with all-purpose flour and brown sugar. They’re so delicious!

How to Make Thumbprint Cookies

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease two cookie sheets or line with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat brown sugar, butter, vanilla, and egg yolk together. Stir in the flour and salt and mix together until all ingredients are combined.

  4. Put cookies sheet in the oven and bake for about 5 minutes. They should puff up slightly.
  5. Remove cookie sheets from the oven. Press thumb or the rounded back of a 1 teaspoon measuring spoon into the center of each cookie, making an indentation. Fill each of the thumbprints with jam.
  6. Return cookie sheets back to the oven and bake for an additional 8-10 minutes until cookie is lightly brown and jam filling is set.
