I often reach for tea on a cold day, but this homemade pumpkin spice latte is so good! By making it yourself at home you can use healthier ingredients and enjoy this delicious drink any time you’re craving it.

Why We Love This Recipe

The first time I made a pumpkin spice latte, my family was so excited! It was a cold afternoon, and I felt like spending the afternoon in the kitchen baking. Whenever the seasons change, you’ll often find me in the kitchen. Our whole family likes to gather there, and it truly is the heart of the home.

On this particular afternoon, the house was filled with the aroma of coffee, pumpkin pie spice, and vanilla—it was such an inviting smell! I had pumpkin spice latte warming on the stove when one of my teenage daughters came home from work, and she was so excited to be greeted with a cozy, pumpkin-y, warm drink.

One of the main things we love about this recipe is how quick and easy it is to create such a satisfying fall drink.

Another thing to love about it is that it’s sweetened with natural sweeteners. You can use either maple syrup or honey, and both of them taste great. Just like this healthy hot cocoa recipe, I usually use maple syrup for sweetener.

Here are some basic supplies you may need for this recipe:

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte Ingredients

Our basic recipe makes 2 servings, but it’s easy to double or triple if you’re serving more people. Find the full ingredient amounts and directions in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  • Coffee: Use strong, hot brewed coffee or espresso to make your pumpkin spice latte.
  • Milk: We usually use whole milk, but you can also use a non-dairy alternative like coconut or almond milk if you prefer.
  • Pumpkin Puree: Make your own or use canned pumpkin puree (just be sure not to get pumpkin pie mix).
  • Maple Syrup: You can also use honey or another sweetener of your choice, but we usually choose maple syrup.
  • Vanilla: I love using my homemade vanilla in this recipe.
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice: You can use store-bought or make your own with this recipe.
  • Whipped Cream: The whipped cream is optional, but it adds so much!

How to Make a Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte

  1. First, make the coffee. Either make some strong brewed coffee or use espresso for this pumpkin spice latte recipe.
  2. Add milk, pumpkin puree, and maple syrup to a medium saucepan and heat over medium heat. Heat until hot but not boiling.
  3. Lower the heat and whisk in the vanilla, pumpkin pie spice, and coffee. Turn heat to lowest setting while you make the whipped cream.
  4. To make the whipped cream, we use about 1 cup heavy whipping cream and sweeten with 2 Tbsp. sugar (you can also use an alternative like maple syrup or stevia to sweeten). Add about 1 tsp vanilla. Beat with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form.
  5. Ladle your homemade pumpkin spice latte into two mugs and garnish with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice.
  6. Enjoy your homemade pumpkin spice latte with some healthy pumpkin oat muffins, pumpkin butterscotch muffins, or a pumpkin chocolate chip cookie!
