Instant Pot Applesauce with Cinnamon

Instant Pot Applesauce is easy to make and a great way to use up a surplus of apples! This recipe for cinnamon applesauce is delicious and naturally sweetened.

Whenever apples are in season in the fall, we love to go to the apple orchard and pick apples for a fun family outing.

Even when they’re not in season, we often get a great deal on organic apples from our local food co-op. Right now, we have lots of apples on our own apple trees, so that’s why I’m thinking about applesauce!

I love using organic apples for homemade applesauce, because then I don’t worry about leaving the skin on.

One of my favorite ways to use up extra apples is to make homemade applesauce.

It’s also the perfect way to use up older or slightly soft apples.

It makes a great snack or even a dessert following a simple meal.

The easy recipe below will show you how to make applesauce in the Instant Pot.

Supplies Needed to Make Instant Pot Applesauce

Ingredients

  • 10-12 medium apples
  • 1/2 cup apple juice, apple cider, or water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

How to Make Instant Pot Applesauce

1. Peel, core, and chop the apples small if you want a smooth, skinless applesauce. Or, you can also leave the skin on and use a food mill after completing the cooking cycle. The food mill will make the applesauce smooth and remove the skins.

If I have organic apples, I leave the skin on and we think it tastes delicious this way!

2. Add the apples, liquid (juice, cider, or water), lemon juice, and cinnamon to the Instant Pot. Put the lid on, lock it, and turn the valve to sealing.

3. Press the manual button and cook at high pressure for 4 minutes.

4. After the cooking time is up, do a natural release.

5. Open the lid and stir. Use an immersion blender to blend the applesauce into a smooth texture.

6. Optional: run the completed applesauce through a food mill if you left the skin on and you want to remove it.

7. Ladle the applesauce into jars using a canning funnel, and store in the refrigerator for a week or two (about 7-10 days). For longer storage, you can pack the applesauce into freezer jars  or bags and freeze for up to 6 months.

If  you want to be able to store it on your pantry shelves, you could also can it.

Note: You can adjust the flavor of the applesauce by adding up to 1/8 cup of honey if it’s not sweet enough. We usually don’t add this, but just enjoy it as it is.

  • For storage, ladle the completed applesauce into canning jars. I use a quart jar and a pint jar. You could also use several pint jars if you prefer. Store in the refrigerator. They'll stay good for a week or two. For longer storage you can freeze in freezer jars or bags for up to 6 months.
  • Optional: run the completed applesauce through a food mill if you left the skin on and you want to remove it.

Notes

Note: You can adjust the flavor of the applesauce by adding up to 1/8 cup of honey if it's not sweet enough. We usually don't add this, but just enjoy it as it is. This recipe makes about 1 1/2 quarts of applesauce.
If you decide to double or triple the recipe, don't increase the amount of liquid in the recipe or it will be too watery. Be sure to remove the completed applesauce soon after the natural release has finished.

  4. Wow! This looks delicious, but I can’t imaging making only one quart of applesauce at a time! Maybe because I have two teen and one tween boys, and they devour everything in sight! When we make applesauce, we make a ton!

    This, however, would be fun to make for a small family.

    1. We love it! I know what you mean about the smaller batch. We usually make a lot more than this for our family of 7, but this is a doable batch size for those who are new to making it in the Instant Pot! 🙂
