The Carrot Seed {Before Five in a Row}

150 shares
The Carrot Seed was such a sweet and simple Before Five in a Row book!
Activities and recipes for The Carrot Seed BFIAR!

The Carrot Seed

We started our study of The Carrot Seed during the summer, after our carrots had come up in the garden.
First, we looked at how tiny carrot seeds are.
Then we picked the carrots in the garden that were ready to be picked.
We also planted a new row of carrots for fall harvesting.
I loved watching my little guy’s delight in harvesting the carrots!
We took our carrots inside and made carrot prints with them, by dipping them in paint and then pressing the leaves and carrots down on the paper.
We also read Growing Vegetable Soup and The Little Red Hen, which both went along well with the theme of The Carrot Seed.

One night we made our own vegetable soup that was full of carrots.  This soup was so good, and I was surprised that even some of my pickier eaters loved it (the recipe came from here).
We also made a carrot cake to go with our meal.  This one was a gluten free cake, and now I have no idea where the recipe came from, but it was pretty good.
We have really been enjoying our year with Before Five in a Row.
We mostly just read the books together, maybe do an art project and possibly a cooking project, and sometimes some printables for our BFIAR binder.
I haven’t been using the BFIAR manual at all, and I would go so far as to say it hasn’t been necessary or helpful to me.  I love the selection of books, but we don’t use the discussions or activities at all.  And that’s just personal preference, as I’m sure the manual is probably helpful to some.

    FIAR is new to me, and it's encouraging to know that you don't "go by the book". You have inspired me to give it a try with my little ones.

    Try this soup recipe for Potato Carrot Soup.
    12 potatoes, peeled and cut up
    4 carrots, grated
    8 c. chicken broth
    Bring to a boil and then simmer until potatoes/carrots are very soft. Mash, then add 2 cups half and half and 2 Tbsp. butter. Heat through. Top each bowl with a sprinkle of parsley and a shake of pepper. {Not a THM recipe, but super yummy.}

      If you try it, I hope you enjoy it, Carol! We really love the books.

      And thank you so much for the recipe! That sounds very yummy, and we have lots of potatoes right now, so I'll have to try it!
