Why You’ll Love These Teriyaki Burgers

One of my favorite things about spring and summer is cooking out on the grill. And even on early fall days, it’s still a treat to fire up the grill and throw on some meat for a homemade juicy burger.

This particular teriyaki burger recipe is a little different from traditional Hawaiian teriyaki burgers. Some recipes for teriyaki burgers contain a lot of elaborate ingredients and instructions. Not this recipe! It uses ground chuck with only a few simple ingredients, but the taste of these grilled burgers is out of this world.

And although this recipe doesn’t taste sweet and doesn’t call for pineapple rings, you could add those if you prefer a sweet-flavored burger.

But if you enjoy that full teriyaki flavor made with soy sauce, I think you’ll truly enjoy this recipe! The burgers are so juicy and much tastier than a plain, regular burger made on a charcoal or gas grill.

Ingredients Needed for This Recipe

Find the complete list of ingredients, amounts, and instructions in the recipe card below.

Ground Chuck: â€‹You’ll need two pounds of ground chuck for this recipe. Ground chuck is about 80/20 lean meat/fat, which is leaner than ground beef. This means you’ll have more meat and less fat that cooks off while grilling your burgers.

Mayonnaise: Mayonnaise serves as part of the teriyaki sauce that you pour over the meat. I like to use olive oil mayonnaise or avocado oil mayonnaise

Soy Sauce: Soy sauce adds that classic teriyaki flavor to your grilled burgers. I prefer organic soy sauce, when available. You can also use coconut aminos if you’re avoiding soy.

Minced Garlic:  â€‹Garlic adds a nice touch to the teriyaki sauce.

Minced Ginger: â€‹The flavor of fresh ginger pairs perfectly with teriyaki burgers.

Salt: â€‹You can adjust the amount of salt you use to taste. I love this sea salt

Black Pepper: â€‹Along with the salt, you can use as much or little black pepper as you like as seasoning.

Hamburger Buns: Serve your burgers hot off the grill on your favorite hamburger buns or brioche buns. Use gluten-free buns if you’re avoiding gluten.

Your Favorite Toppings: â€‹Add whatever you like to your burgers. Mustard, ketchup, pickles, tomatoes—the sky’s the limit!

Flip the burgers and brush the second side with the sauce mixture. Flip the burger again and cook until the sauce is caramelized. Repeat as desired.

8. Serve the burgers on buns with traditional toppings like lettuce, tomatoes, red onion, and pickles or serve with sliced pineapple.

How to Serve Teriyaki Burgers

There are a lot of good options for what to serve with your teriyaki burgers. Coleslaw or potato salad might go well, and a lettuce salad with ranch dressing and sourdough croutons would be excellent!

French fries or sweet potato fries always go well with burgers.

And if you need dessert ideas, how about fresh strawberry shortcakechocolate cream cheese brownies, or no-cook homemade vanilla ice cream

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use other types of meat?

Yes, if you don’t have ground chuck or prefer to use something else, ground chicken or ground turkey both work well for grilled burgers.  I’ve never tried them, but chicken teriyaki burgers actually sound really good! Ground chicken and ground turkey both tend to be leaner than ground chuck, so you might want to add a little oil or butter. You can even add a little beef bullion if you want to keep some of that beefy burger flavor.

What about adding pineapple?

Some teriyaki burger recipes use pineapple juice or sliced pineapple, but I didn’t include that with this recipe. You can certainly add pineapple if you want. Fresh pineapple works better than canned, and you should grill the pineapple before adding it to your burger.

What temperature should I cook the burgers to?

For food safety, it’s recommended that burgers reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees F. Use a meat thermometer to check the temperature.
