How to Make Ground Cinnamon
Learn how to make ground cinnamon with whole cinnamon sticks in this easy tutorial.
Cinnamon is a necessary spice in our house! We use cinnamon in so many things. It’s pretty much in use daily! I add it to smoothies, tea, homemade applesauce, and baked goods like cinnamon rolls, apple crisp, and apple spice cupcakes.
In addition to keeping ground cinnamon in the pantry, I also often keep cinnamon sticks on hand. They’re a great addition to a cup of homemade hot cocoa or apple cider. I also use them in my elderberry syrup recipe.
But another great use for whole cinnamon sticks is grinding them to make freshly ground cinnamon. I’m an avid do-it-yourselfer, and I love making my own homemade spice blends. Apple pie spice, pumpkin pie spice, homemade ranch dressing mix, and homemade taco seasoning are just a few of the spice mixes I keep in my pantry.
Making your own homemade ground cinnamon is easy! In this tutorial, I’ll show you how easy it is, with a few different ways to make it.

Supplies
While I’ve used several different methods for making homemade ground cinnamon in the past, today we’re going to focus on using a coffee grinder. If you just need a small amount of cinnamon to garnish a recipe, you may also want to invest in a microplane. This is a fun little gadget that allows you to simply grate the spice over a bowl or directly onto your recipe. I use this occasionally. But for today, the one supply you’ll need is below:
- Coffee Grinder
- Cinnamon Sticks I usually get my cinnamon sticks from our food co-op, Azure Standard, but they can also be found at various places online or at the grocery store.
How to Make Ground Cinnamon
- Break the cinnamon sticks into about ½-inch pieces.
- Place them in the grinder and grind for about 1 minute or until smooth.
Use immediately or store in a sealed container in a cool, dry place for 6-12 months.
FAQ:
Can I make cinnamon powder without a grinder?
There are several other ways to grind the cinnamon sticks. You can use a high-speed blender or mortar and pestle. Or, you can place the cinnamon sticks in a plastic zipper bag and then pound the cinnamon sticks to break them up. You can then grind them finer by hand with the mortar and pestle. This is more labor-intensive, however.
How do you store ground cinnamon?
Store the ground cinnamon in an airtight container in the pantry away from sunlight.
